trimhawaii There is no definitive date when the Hawaiians began riding waves. Some historians estimate that it was 1000 AD, but this number could be off by hundreds of years. What is known is surfboards were prized possessions to the Hawaiian people for at least a thousand years. Historians and scholars all make mention of the care given to papa he’e nalu; from the boards being wrapped in cloths, to the coconut and kukui nut oils rubbed on the board to better preserve the wood.
