She thinks that the only purpose of food is to give the body energy, hence her bizarre dismissal of any macronutrients that are not carbohydrates. In reality, food is also required to maintain the body's composition. The human cellular membrane is made of fat and its transporter channels are composed predominantly of proteins. We need them.
7. She makes bizarre health claims. This point is the most concerning as I presume that a lot of her followers are young and/or misinformed and therefore vulnerable. In her videos she constantly refers to unsubstantiated cases of raw vegan foods curing serious chronic illnesses. In another highly troubling video she explains how she lost her period as a consequence of her raw diet and identified this as being a healthy and positive side effect as a woman's period is "toxicity leaving the body." I would hope that anyone who has sat through a high school Sex Ed class would know that this is not what a period is. Amenorrhea indicates stress or malnutrition in females, often accompanies intense bone loss and is actually a factor used to diagnose anorexia in the DSM IV. It is very unhealthy, particularly when precipitated by extreme dietary restrictions and exercise regimes and it concerns me that she may have impressionable young viewers who are not aware of this.

I would lastly like to add that I don't think that Freelee is a bad person, in fact I find her zest for life, personal resilience and desire to help others commendable and endearing- it's not difficult to see why her videos have become so popular. Despite this, Freelee's take on nutrition is extreme and profoundly unscientific. Please do your research before deciding to jump on her bandwagon. Eating fresh, raw fruit and vegetables is indeed very healthy, but doing so is just as possible for those not following an extreme and detrimental raw vegan diet as those who are.

One of the most widely reported hurdles for sustained weightloss is appetite control. Fructose levels in the blood do not activate the brain's satiation response, and consequently have been attributed to the promotion of sugar-binges. Freelee illustrates this phenomenon by opening admitting to stuffing herself full of large quantities of food in order to feel satisfied.
5. She believes that fructose provides an optimal energy source to cells and thus should be consumed in boundless quantities. In reality, fructose is poorly absorbed by virtually all body cells (apart from the liver cells) as it relies on the glut-5 transporter to enter them, which most cells lack. By contrast, glucose enters cells by the glut-4 transporter which is dependent on insulin. Because raised blood glucose levels promotes insulin production in a healthy pancreas, glucose is easily transported into the body's cells for energy in metabolically healthy individuals. Thus, glucose is the far superior carbohydrate in terms of providing energy for cells. Additionally, the poor absorption of fructose from the gastrointestinal tract and almost exclusive metabolism by the liver has led high-fructose diets to be associated with metabolic liver dysfunction and fatty liver disease.

Normally I wouldn't entertain things like this, but I feel the need to given the incredible number of followers that she has managed to attract with her absolutely unfounded and unscientific claims regarding the superiority (or even healthiness) of her raw vegan diet. (Also, I am getting a tad sick of @durianrider spamming all my photos). Below are my key gripes.

1. She consumes WAY too much fructose. Yes, obviously I was going to have a problem with this, but it's because accredited bodies back me on it. At present, the World Health Organisationtion recommends that sugar consumption for adults be limited to a mere six to twelve teaspoons a day. A single banana contains about four. Freelee has about five in a single smoothie, plus things like coconut sugar and dates. Do the maths.
2. Her diet lacks variety. Freelee seems to believe that if a certain food is classified as healthy, such as a banana, that this means consuming that food often exclusively and in excessive quantities at meal times is also healthy (i.e. eating 51 bananas in a day). In reality, the body needs a variety of foods to ensure that adequate nutrition is achieved.
3. She almost exclusively assesses the healthfulness of foods by their macronutrient properties, as in part evidenced by her oft-spoken catchphrase, 'carb up.' Macronutrients are carbohydrates, protein and fats- the energy blocks of food. While it is very important to achieve the right balance of these for an optimal diet, a significant consideration for healthy eating should also be the micronutrient properties of foods, in other words the range of vitamins and minerals they possess. The diet that Freelee promotes shows a strong micronutrient deficiency, in particular calcium and vitamin B.
