gounesco Chaukhandi (tomb) Of Hazrat Khalil Ullah: On the north side of the road between Ashtur and Bidar lies this beautiful octagonal-shaped tomb, which was built by Allaudin Shah for his chief spiritual advisor. Most of the Persian glazed tiles have dropped off the facade, but the surviving stone work and calligraphy above the arched doorway along with the views from the tomb’s plinth deserve a quick detour form the way.
Yet another place you can visit when you come over for the Go Heritage Run at Bidar. Register here - http://www.gounesco.com/go-heritage-run-bidar/.

ilong4you Sidhout Fort

Sidhout Fort, constructed in 1303 AD, lies on the banks of the Pennar River near #Kadapa in the southern #Indian state of #Andhrapradesh
The fort extends over an area of 30 acres. Visitors can view gateways and decorated pillars at the two ends of the fort.
Top of the fort has been adorned with carvings of Gajalakshmi (Lakshmi whose vehicle is an elephant)

Sidhout is a corrupt version of the earlier name of the place called Siddhavatam. It is formed with two words Siddha + Vatam. Siddhas are people/seers who had magical powers to heal and Vata is a Banyan Tree (Ficus Benghalensis) Siddhavatam was famous for these Siddhas who practiced ascetic living under the banyan trees.

ilong4you Kubera. The treasurer

Kubera, a mythological character from Hindu Mythology. I have not talked about Kubera in any of my posts so far.

During my recent trip to #Vontimitta near #Kadapa in the South Indian State of #AndhraPradesh I visited an ancient temple of about 1000 years dedicated to #Rama
The temple is known as Kodanda Rama Temple (Rama who wields a Bow and Arrow)

In one of the quiet corners of the temple, I could capture the relief of Kubera on a pillar.

Kubera is always depicted as a "pot bellied" almost ugly man with his hands raised as though supporting the plinth of the temple.
Kubera is considered as the treasurer of the heavenly world and considered to be awash with the riches. Hence all the temples will have this heavenly treasurer.

In Hindu Mythology, often gods and goddesses are depicted with their animal or avian vehicles. For example, Ganapathi or Ganesha, the elephant headed son of Lord Shiva has his rat, his brother Karthikeya or Muruga has peacock, Indra, the lord of the heaven has multi tusked elephant called Airavata (pronounced i-ra-vata), Goddess Durga has her Lion, Lord Vishnu has his Eagle called Garuda, Shiva has his bull called Nandi.

I believe, ancient Indians associated these animals with the Mythological Characters to encourage conservation of these animals and birds.

Strangely, the vehicle of Kubera the treasurer is Man. It is so symbolically true as man is a slave to riches .

Though not most Kubera sculptures do not show this aspect. When I was going through more than one ancient scriptures on mythology and sculpture, this is usually mentioned.

ilong4you Lunch at Shivanasamudra. Shivanasamudra except for few days in a year is a quite place. Last time I was here a month or so ago, I was sole visitor to this place. This time, there was a sea of people who had visited for enjoying the waterfalls.

There is a restaurant , Mayura, run by the state tourism department catering to hungry visitors. But during the peak days, a number of stalls serving popular street food crop up.
Ask kinds of street food like bhelpuri, masalapuri, cut fruits, cucumbers, berries, tender coconut are sold.

Since the restaurant was crowded, I decided to lunch on the street food instead. I visited every counter which was set up and tried everything.

Bhelpuri was the first. Bhelpuri is an olio of puffed rice, chopped onions, green chilies, coriander, salt, dry and wet spices, grated carrots, crunchy-spicy fried condiments are thoroughly mixed. Yum.

ilong4you Aghoreshwara temple of Keladi, Aghoreshwara is a manifestation of Shiva in Hindu mythology.

Nayaka kingdom was a small and brief period in the history of Karnataka, but they have left behind beautiful monuments.

ilong4you A very strange character on one of the pillars at 11th Century Kodanda Rama temple at Vontimitta near Kadapa.

I have not been able to identify the figure. It is unlike any other I have seen so far. This man seems to be holding a swan (dead?) In his lap.

Anyone can analyze this?

ilong4you Saturday night, out of impulse wanted to drive down to my place of birth, Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh. Started at 11 in the night and back at 11pm Sunday night. Visited Kadapa after nearly 3 decades.

A hot and dry place, Kadapa holds special significance in my heart as it was here, my mother and I both were born. Though, things of changed enormously and could not even locate the home where I was born, and have fond childhood memories of, it was a hectic but good drive.
During this trip, I visited an ancient 11th century temple at Vontimitta, about 20 kms from Kadapa. The Rama temple at Vontimitta has influences of Chola and Vijayanagara architecture.
Famous Telugu medieval poet Potana and Carnatic music composer Annamacharya were associated with this temple.

Sunday when I visited this ancient temple, I was surprised to see a lot of school children having competition on the temple premises.
The temple authorities and the schools had organized a competition about Potana's works for school children. I hope the children will carry forward the heritage.

I am saddened though for the lack of proper upkeep of this ancient temple.

The temple courtyard has ancient stone inscriptions which shows the common origins of Kannada and Telugu languages.

ilong4you You are my pillar of strength.... This 11th century pillar at Chennakesava temple at Somanathapura temple is amazing. Without the modern implements, people of the ancient and medieval world were able to carve precisely.
Even if you considered a rudimentary turning lathe, mounting and rotating this massive rock for carving itself would be an engineering feat in 11th century.
