German Brick Expressionism in Cologne, Germany: The »Hansahochhaus« by Jacob Koerfer, built 1924–1925. This is one of nearly twenty different head sculptures above the huge ground floor windows.
With a height of 65 m / 213 ft and 17 floors it was the highest (commercial/office) building in Europe for a short period of time. The construction took only 135 days (scattered over 15 months). A nearby cinema building did not survive WWII as well as four sculptures which are missing since WWII.

artdecoantwerpen Expressionistic details on a former brewery and pharma company building in Cologne, Germany. The architect and the date of construction are unknown to me (appr. late 1920s to early 1930s?). The 1920s have been troubled times in Germany. The »Weimar Republic« was the first representative democracy ever in Germany and keeping it that way hasn’t been that easy. During riots and attempted coups different forces tried to take over the leadership again and again. The German architects found inspiration in these erratic circumstances and developed a certain bundle of architectural details which reflected these difficult times: sharp triangular spikes as decorative elements, triangular oriel windows and so on. Everything quite dynamic and edged. Triangles everywhere, spikes everywhere.

artdecoantwerpen This is the other one of the two quite small sculptures (appr. 45cm/18inches) next to the entrance to a building in Cologne, Germany. A very smart follower on Facebook knew the answer to yesterday’s photo: The woman holding a bunch of crop in her arm is Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, grain crops and fertility in ancient Roman religion (thanks for the hint, Dorien … and thank you for your first guess, @zizivavoom, you were very very close!!). So this is the male sculpture on the other side of the entrance. He holds this majestic sword and I am going to ask again: Who is it?

  •   zizivavoom Ceres like cereal = grain , cool 1w
  •   zizivavoom Mars - god of war ( sword ) , Spring & agriculture. 1w
  •   zizivavoom " God of war, spring, growth in nature, agriculture, terror, anger, revenge, courage and fertility. Protector of cattle. The son of Jupiter and Juno, he was the god of war. Mars was regarded as the father of the Roman people because he was the father of Romulus. His festivals were held in March (named for him) and October. " from Wikipedia 1w
  •   artdecoantwerpen Sounds perfectly logic! :) Thanks you so much for your effort @zizivavoom ! But the final questions still remain: Who built the building, for which purpose / client, when, and why did the architect chose these two sculptures? 1w

artdecoantwerpen This is one out of two quite small sculptures (appr. 45cm/18inches) next to the entrance to a building in Cologne, Germany and I really do not know anything about this structure. The river Rhine is quite near and it could be possible that the building once belonged to a trading company (maybe even colonial goods?) I would like to know what the crop stand for. The other sculpture shows a male holding a huge sword pointing upside down in front of his legs. Does anybody have a clue what these sculptures could mean?
