scottishgyrl Davidson Dam is named for Tom Davidson who constructed the concrete dam around 1915. The stream, Buck Creek, was used by pioneers to supply water power for grist mills. Davidson and his sons constructed a skating rink and dance hall on the lake shore. The rink and dance hall are no longer but each year the town of Helena, Alabama put on Buck's Creek Festival with live music, arts, crafts and food vendors. The highlight of the festival is the release of hundreds of yellow rubber ducks, purchased for $5.00 per duck, into the creek. All proceeds go to local charities, the ducks are numbered and the first 3 ducks to cross the finish line win prizes for the "owners" who purchased them. Helena is a suburb of Birmingham, established in the 1800s. #buckcreek #davidsondam #dam #creek #water #land #landscape #helena #alabama #suburb of #birminghamAL #getoutside #explorebham #explorealabama #instagrambham #inbirmingham #hikealabama #igerus #igerusa #insta_america #alabamathebeautiful #nature #naturelovers #bhamwikifacts 2d

scottishgyrl The Tutwiler Hotel (named after Major Edward Tutwiler) was a 13-story brick and limestone luxury hotel on the southeast corner of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street in downtown Birmingham. It was constructed in 1914 by a group of local investors. It closed in 1972 and was demolished in 1974 to make room for 1st Alabama Bank, now known as Regions Plaza. Another Tutwiler Hotel, named for the original, opened in 1986 in the former Ridgely Apartments, built in 1915, near Linn Park, as seen in photo. There are 149 luxury rooms and a restaurant, Century Birmingham. There have been reports of a male ghost at the present location #thetutweiler #tutweilerhotel #centurybirmingham #hotel #building #old #vintage #brick #architecture #land #landscape #getoutside #explorebham #explorealabama #inbirmingham #instagrambham #alabamathebeautiful #igerus #igerusa #insta_america #urbanhiking #hikealabama #bhamwikifacts #birminghamAL 3d

scottishgyrl The common eastern carpenter bee, Xylocopa virginica, is the carpenter bee most often encountered in the eastern U.S. It is often mistaken for a large bumblebee species. The carpenter bees have a black dot atop the thorax. They can be important pollinators and sometimes bore holes in wood dwellings to form partitions between the cells to nest. Male eastern carpenter bees are curious and will investigate anyone, including humans.#bees #carpenterbee #xylocopavirginica #hydrangea #birminghamAL #birminghamgardens #garden #bhamgardens #nature #naturelovers #inbirmingham #instagrambham #getoutside #explorebham #explorealabama #hikealabama #land #landscape #igerus #igerusa #insta_america #alabamathebeautiful #wikifacts 4d

scottishgyrl John's City Diner, as described in their bio, offer "Southern Comfort food to Gastro Pub." Meatloaf over smashed potatoes, Crispy Duck, flat iron steaks and pork belly & grits, are just a few selections. The meatloaf is the best I've tasted. The diner opened in 1944 by Greek Restauranteur John Proferis and was moved from 21st St.,N to its current location. Shannon and Shana Gober purchased the diner in 2004 and have worked on restorations inside and out. In 2014 the side of the building was painted to include the diner's logo and the slogan, "It's nice to have you in Birmingham". #johnscitydiner #birminghamAL #bhamfood #bhameats #bhamfacades #architecture #old #vintage #weathered #alabamasky #bluesky #downtown #art #building #food #getoutside #explorebham #explorealabama #urbanhiking #hikealabama #inbirmingham #instagrambham #igerus #igerusa #insta_america #bhamwikifacts 5d

scottishgyrl Electra is the 23-foot-tall, golden statue atop the eastern end of the tiled roof of the Alabama Power Building. She was originally entitled "Divinity of Light," and sculpted by Edward Field Sanford, Jr of New York. The 4,000 pound bronze casting was covered in gold leaf and holds 6 lightening bolts over her head. The statue was secured in place on May 10, 1926. That summer, Birmingham Post satirist "Dr. B. U. L. Conner" began a series of illustrated fanciful episodes in the courtship of Electra by Birmingham's other scantily-clad mythical colossus, Vulcan. The potholes on 18th Street were explained as the smitten god's footprints. The popular serial cemented the pair's storied connection into the city's common folklore even before Vulcan was moved to Red Mountain in the 1930s.In 1996 to celebrate her 70th anniversary, Electra was regilded. #birminghamAL #electra #bronze #sculpture #art #building #architecture #inbirmingham #instagrambham #getoutside #explorebham #explorealabama #urbanhiking #hikealabama #alabamathebeautiful #alabamasky #igerus #igerusa #insta_america #bhamwikifacts 1w

scottishgyrl Birmingham, Alabama was founded on June 1, 1871, by the Elyton Land Company. And named after Birmingham, England. In 1916 a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit. The start of the 20th century brought the substantial growth that gave Birmingham the nickname "The Magic City," as the downtown area developed from a low-rise commercial and residential district into a busy grid of neoclassical mid-rise and high-rise buildings and busy streetcar lines. The 2010 Birmingham Hoover statistical census had over 1.1 million residents listed, approximately 1/4 of Alabama's population. #birminghamAL #magiccity #thisismytown #getoutside #explorebham #explorealabama #skyline #downtown #architecture #old #vintage #weathered #antique #alabamasky #alabamathebeautiful #bluesky #clouds #land #landscape #inbirmingham #instagrambham #instagramalabama #igerus #igerusa #insta_america #merica #wikifacts 2w
