itrains4days Thanksgiving deserves a special #rarespeciestuesday. While many of my rare species are relatively unknown and/or underappreciated by many enthusiasts and herpers and herpetologists, this one is relatively well known. Described in 2007, the Central Ranges Taipan – Oxyuranus temporalis is the third known species of the extremely dangerous genus. The first Taipan described in over 125 years, it was first discovered in 2006, identified at first as a species of brown snake (Pseudonaja), until further identification, revealed that the snake was definitely not a brown snake, but a distinct species of Taipan. It is easily distinguished by the other two Taipan species by the arrangement of the temporal scales (hence its scientific name), coloration, scalation, molecular data, and range: all this pointing to an extremely distinct and new species, which landed this snake a spot at number five on “The Top 10 New Species of 2007”. Since its initial discovery, several specimens have been found near its Type Locality, around the Great Victorian Desert, Central Ranges, and the Great Sandy Desert of the Northern Territory, Western Australia, and possibly South Australia in arid to semiarid desert and scrub. It ranges far west and south of the other two species of Taipans, but molecular work insinuates that this species radiated rather recently from its closest relative, the Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus). Molecular data also infers that this Taipan may have a broader distribution than currently recognized, with genetic variation low in specimens from all localities, a trait common in other widely distributed elapids. The natural history of this snake is still poorly known. Dissection of preserved specimens revealed rodent hairs, suggesting a strictly mammalian diet likely only of Rodents and Bandicoots. It is, like its relatives, a diurnal species, with most specimens found crossing roads or on the crawl. A study based on specimens in captivity revealed its venom is primarily neurotoxic, and less toxic compared to the Inland Taipan. However, as a large elapid it is potentially dangerous, and should be treated with respect, and amongst the world's most venomous snakes. 10h

  •   sidewinder_stephen Seems like you've got it down, all you really gotta do is master balancing ISO, shutter speed, and f-stop. It takes a while though, I'm still figuring it out myself. 11h
  •   jared68nova @sidewinder_stephen I just hate having to fuck with all those settings when out in the field whilst trying to wrestle with whatever subject I'm trying to photo. Really lookin forward to doing night sky shots 11h
  •   sidewinder_stephen @jared68nova Invest in a manfrotto tripod, they're badass. That's what I use for all my landscape photography and long exposure night shots. 11h
