noreanwarrior The Platonic notion of the Creator as geometer is dramatically expressed by William Blake's frontspiece to his book Europe: A Prophecy. His Creator is Urizen (the root whose name is the Greek word meaning "to set limits"), creator of the material world, author pf false religions & tyrant over the human spirit because of his reasoning powers & materialism. By his act of creation, Urizen separated the beings who represent, respectively, the Spirit of Joy & Poetry & the Spirit of Repressive Religion & Law. Urizen's act of separation is synonymous with Carl Jung's observation when he said "the devil is a dualist, forever making 2 out of 1". (Likewise, in Isaiah 54:7 the Demiurge says " I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I Yahweh do all these things.") The compassee derive from Milton's lines in Paradise Lost where he wrote: "He took the golden compass prepar'd ..to circumscribe this universe and all created things". Milton could have well been thinking of Plato's Demiurge (which is actually a seen as a mere humble craftsman rather than originator of evil as in Gnosticism) as many Christian Neoplatonists & Kabbalists did in the Renaissance & still do today. Thus, the biblical myth of separation of earth & sky & the coming of evil, contribute to Blake's gnosis aswell as his political & religious allegory. 12h
  •   lucid_venusian I wonder if light and darkness has always been apart of humanity or if many, many moons ago it really was heaven on Earth. It still can be Heaven on Earth according to perspective, but I wonder if any planets were literally heaven-like without suffering. 11h
  •   noreanwarrior Hmm. Good question @lucid_venusian The dualistic notion of light/darkness is something that should be transcended. The Gnostics corrected this in the Gospel of Philip saying "Light and Darkness, life and death, right and left, are brothers of one another. They are inseparable. Because of this neither are the good good, nor evil evil, nor is life life, nor death death. For this reason each one will dissolve into its earliest origin. But those who are exalted above the world are indissoluble, eternal." Basically "exalted above the world" Id equate with the Buddhist notion of not getting caught up with the dualism that pervades in our thoughts (world/experience) but to return to a perspective of non-dualism/"eternal". Most creation myths such as the Gnostic/Hermetic ones are actually of psychological fragmentation. A descent into matter in which the soul/psyche gets inmeshed in the material world of the Demiurge. This happens when we are kids. At first, the world(experience) is non dual (paradise/no suffering) then we get kicked out of this garden of complaicency & are bombarded with the cataclysms of life (symbolized in mythology by the descent into matter in Hermetic/Neoplatonism/Gnosticism & being kicked out of the garden in Kabbalah) this sometimes happens when as kids we start to realize that life isnt all that cartoony as we thought it was. Nonetheless we have a divine spark that we can breathe back into life with our joy, our passion for life & our art. Thus, returning to the state of oneness denied by the Demiurge, which is sometimes none other than the personal ego. 10h
