indieesq #OnTheOfficeOfficeTurntable DINAH WASHINGTON: Dinah Jams (EmArcy-Mercury MG 36000, Mono, Deep Groove, EmArcy Jazz Series, 1954) Can anybody shed light on the order of the variations on this release? Front and back cover only include EmArcy information, the label is clearly Mercury Records, EmArcy Jazz Series, and around the upper ring "Vendor: Mercury Record Corporation" Dinah Washington With Clifford Brown - Max Roach Tentet - #CliffordBrown, #MaynardFerguson, #ClarkTerry (trumpet) #HerbGeller (alto saxophon) #HaroldLand (tenor saxophone) #RichiePowell, #JuniorMance (piano) #KeterBetts, #GeorgeMorrow (bass) #MaxRoach (drums) #DinahWashington (vocals) Los Angeles, CA, August 14, 1954 #VocalJazz #EmArcyRecords #Jazz #JazzVinyl #HardBop #Vinyl #VinylPorn #VinyligClub #NowPlaying 1d
  •   clgoss1 I think it's just a later repress. EmArcy was the Jazz wing of Mercury from what I recall. (EmArcy is just a phonetic spelling of MRC.) 1d
  •   clgoss1 Great record, by the way. Love Maynard Ferguson's trumpet solo on Summertime. 1d
  •   abrasive_beautiful My feeling is that the original press would be big drummer label like the Clifford Brown/Max Roach releases of similar vintage. 1d
  •   willecke Dunno if this will outline the Dinah Washington record exactly but is a pretty great tool for Emarcy records http://microgroove.jp/mercury/ 1d
  •   willecke Without looking I'd agree with @abrasive_beautiful probably big drummer, deep groove, glossy cover, blue printing on back 1d
  •   indieesq @willecke @abrasive_beautiful @clgoss1 So the funny thing is that I do have a straight EmArcy edition of the album, with a deep groove, big drummer label, HOWEVER, strangely it is a matte cover and not glossy, which immediately made me thing that it had to be a later edition. 1d
  •   willecke @indieesq I wish I could decode why some record labels switch seemingly at will from super glossy to mid glossy to matte to uncoated covers, prestige I've found to be bizarre in this respect. And now that you mention it perhaps Emarcy too 1d
  •   indieesq And the EmArcy copy has in the lower left hand corner the name of the original owner and the date that she purchased the record in 1956 1d

Another Iron Man's copy of my collection, the quality sound it's great too on this press. On this day, 51 years ago Eric Dolphy died.
I still remember the first time when I bought my first Dolphy's record, it was "Iron Man". What a revolution in my mind then! Dolphy here was joined by reedmen Prince Lasha, Sonny Simmons and Clifford Jordan, trumpeter Woody Shaw , vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassists Richard Davis and Eddie Khan, drummers J.C. Moses and Charles Moffett, and bassoonist Garvin Bushell. This session distinguishes itself by the absence of a piano.Bobby Hutcherson's vibes and Richard Davis's bass give us a stellar mood. My favorite parts are when Dolphy plays bass clarinet and flute, on "Come Sunday" and "Ode To C.P." Both are lovely , moments of pure sweetness . We really have impression to hear a bird . All line-up is exceptional ! It's the hottest record, the perfect thing for sure . Forbidden to didn't have this outstanding LP !
