gregorypeck.ig Gregory in "MacKenna's Gold"
As I mentioned in a post yesterday I ordered quite a few of Greg's movies! I got Twelve O' Clock High, MacKenna's Gold, Only the Valiant, the Stalking Moon, Roman Holiday and the Guns of Navarone! They all will be here tomorrow except Only the Valiant. Since I don't get a lot of TV time (we have one TV to share between 5 people and we don't like the same things) the only movie I ordered that I have seen is Roman Holiday. I am so excited to watch them! Would you guys like me to post pics of them when they get here?

Filled with delight and wonder and unexpected poignancy, this romantic comedy, which has influenced that genre ever since its release, also happens to be one of the better romantic comedies ever.
Audrey Hepburn's American debut showcased her unique talents from the beginning, with an authenticity and sweet yet classy vulnerability rarely seen, even today. And Gregory Peck is witty, sly, and incredibly charming. The story is of a Princess who is overwhelmed by her status and responsibilities, and while in Rome she runs away and meets a journalist, who recognizes her as the princess but decides not to let her know, and joins her on her "holiday," all the while not revealing that he is a journalist or that he intends to turn their adventures into a hit story for the press. Or so he starts off with the intention of, anyway.
It's often said that this film set the standard for all romantic comedies to come, and I wish that were true. Few rom coms live up to the loveliness and poignancy of Roman Holiday. It's funny and sweet and innocent, and the characters are absolutely lovable from the very beginning, shortcomings and all. The pacing is essentially perfect, it holds up well under aging, and the performances are great, never overdone or underplayed. And in many ways this film broke my heart and left me with this strange mixture of joy, nostalgia, and emptiness. That's what I mean by its poignancy. This film doesn't exist in its own bubble, the way most rom coms do these days. It lets reality slip into its otherwise wonderful fabric, which in the end sets it apart and makes it a great film, when it too easily could have slipped into generic obscurity. In some ways it's about growing up, about the separation of fantasy (the key in the title being "holiday") and reality, though mostly, taken at face value, it's really just a great film worthy of its classic status, which also happens to be the catalyst to the contemporary and usually lesser romantic comedy genre.

emilyerin10 Watching Grease, I got to reminiscing about my biggest childhood crushes. Before I got into middle school and started obsessing over @realchristianslater @jason_priestley and #lukeperry, my heart belonged to #jamesdarren #gregorypeck #burtreynolds #michaeljackson #maxwellcaulfield and #chevychase
Of course #kenickie and #dannyzuko have a special place in my heart too...
