michelledebenport We have good news and bad news today in our little #backyardgarden... we found only part of one of our caterpillars on it's leaf this afternoon but this other little guy is about three-times his size from two days ago. (this was the lighter colored one from the earlier photos). 1d

michelledebenport We took one of our butterfly eggs to our #homeschool co-op on a branch we clipped from our lemon tree and are rooting in a vial of water. We left the other two alone. All three emerged from their eggs today. So exciting! (We're still thinking the butterfly was a #GiantSwallowtail, but time will tell.) #backyardgarden || Interesting facts: Butterflies glue their eggs to leaves of their host plants. The larva or caterpillar inside the egg eats its way out of the egg and then eats the egg. The caterpillar will then proceed to eat 20 times it's weight in leaves. The life span of a butterfly from egg to death is usually less than 2 months. Soon after the female butterfly lays her eggs she dies. There are estimated to be over 15,000 different species or kinds of butterflies. Each butterfly has certain plants or only one plant that it lays it's egg on. (I've been teaching about host plants at our homeschool classes all week.) :) 3d

comesailaway my wild lime tree🌳 ~ so full of life ~ I planted it years ago to attract the #giantswallowtail and not only does it fly by, land and visit my tree all year I have a beautiful bird nest in the tree and red cardinals that play and eat every morning and squirrels that come in the afternoon ~ and once a year I get bees, thousands of bees that buzzzzz and pollinate for 2 days. Today is that day. I was hoping to record the buzzz sound but it was too windy so Peter Gabriel's song will have to do. I love my tree and all the movement and life it gives and gets. I love the nature cycle.#wildlimetree #bees 6d

nicoletabbycat My dad found a butterfly outside in the grass this morning. It was too cold to fly, so he brought it inside. Long story short, he is a Giant Swallowtail and my mom and I named him Benedict Butterbatch x33 I babysat him in my room for about 4 hours!! We just let him go but it was fun while it lasted ヽ(;▽;)ノ he will be missed :,33 #butterfly #carnations #giantswallowtail #cute #aesthetic 1w
