bluraydvd1999 The Book Thief starring Geoffrey Rush ( #Shine ), Emily Watson ( #WarHorse ), Sophie Nélisse ( #MonsieurLazhar ), Ben Schnetzer ( #Pride ) and Roger Allam ( #VForVendetta ). During ww2 a young girl finds solace from stealing books and sharing them to others. Okay, I may get hate for this review, but I'm going to say it... I did not like this film. Geoffrey Rush was the best thing about this and at times was what saved the film. What I didn't like was how the story which literally could've been told in ten minutes did not need to be over two hours. The narrator I didn't really like, the film was depressing enough with him telling us that we're going to die. The film cuts to black and then fades in again about eight times in the last twenty minutes. Rudy was annoying. The girl being a book thief wasn't really the main part of the story. She steals like three books. Some scenes I found laughable. Okay, the ending was quite good even though it went on for far too long. The scene with Rudy getting a book out of the water was ridiculous. The book would've been totally ruined. The snowman in the basement was sweet although I find it hard to see how it didn't just melt, I understand it was cold, but they had a candle right next to it. Some of the dialogue was beautiful, most of it just seemed to be there to take up the running time. It was the intense, emotional drama I wanted it to be. It was a dull and plodding story that didn't really build up to much. Of course the film is watchable, but at times it just felt lazy and cliched. The scene with Liesel and Rudy in the rubble at the end. I'm sorry, but that wasn't sad at all. It was like the filmmakers were doing their very best to make a quite sad scene the saddest thing ever. Maybe I'm not giving the film enough credit. The person I watched it with loved it and was in tears, so maybe it is just me. I haven't read the book, so I can't comment on anything about that. Yes, some (probably most) people will find this film beautiful and emotional, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe if it was an hour long TV special it could've worked, but then it would've had to miss lots of the book out... (Review continued in comments) 5d
