aerospaceastronomy Saturn, the ringed planet, is the sixth planet from the sun and the second largest planet in the solar system. It is the farthest planet from the earth visible to the naked eye.
The planet is a gas giant made up mostly of hydrogen and helium. It spins very fast, completing a rotation every 10.5 hours. This rapid spinning causes Saturn to bulge at its equator and flatten at its poles, the planet is 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers) wider at its equator than between the poles.
Saturn is home to powerful lightning storms, 10,000 times stronger than on Earth, that occur in huge, deep thunderstorms columns nearly as large as the entire Earth. Its poles are also home to impressive auroras, the ones which vary from day to day as on Earth, but rather than last a few minutes as on Earth, they can continue for days.
Saturn has at least 62 moons, including some of the most important ones nowadays for astronomers and astrobiologist. The biggest moon is Titan, which is slightly larger than Mercury.
Saturn has also a great ring system around it. The rings are mostly composed of pieces of ice and rock, the ones thag can be in size as large as a house. The rings are believed to be debris left over from comets, asteroids or shattered moons.

n_e_o_p #Repost @ocastronomy: Dione, Rings, Shadows, Saturn
What's happening in this strange juxtaposition of moon and planet? First and foremost, Saturn's moon Dione was captured here in a dramatic panorama by the robotic Cassini spacecraft currently orbiting the giant planet. The bright and cratered moon itself spans about 1100-km, with the large multi-ringed crater Evander visible on the lower right. Since the rings of Saturn are seen here nearly edge-on, they are directly visible only as a thin horizontal line that passes behind Dione. Arcing across the bottom of the image, however, are shadows of Saturn's rings, showing some of the rich texture that could not be seen directly. In the background, few cloud features are visible on Saturn. The featured image was taken during the last planned flyby of Dione by Cassini, as the spacecraft is scheduled to dive into Saturn's atmosphere during 2017.

rluvesscience #sciencefacts #science #astronomy #space #cosmos #universe #solarsystem #planets #moon #jovian #gasgiant #jupiter #milkyway #milkywaygalaxy #jupitermoon #jupitersmoon #Io - Jupiter's moon Io is about 4.5 billion years old, fourth largest of all its' moons, has the highest density, and is the driest object in the solar system. It is one of the four Galilean moons with a highly elliptical orbit 🌐 and is located the furthest inside. It has over 400 active volcanoes making it the most geologically active body in our solar system! Loki Patera is a volcanic depression ️ that is the largest and most notable feature. It is about 124 miles in diameter, at least 373 million miles from Earth, 🌎 and here the denser crust solidifies on top of a lava lake, ️ but episodically will sink into the lake, ️yielding to a raise in thermal emission.💭 Basically, this volcanic activity is constantly reshaping Io's surface. Recently, the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) 🔭 was able to capture sharper images, which suggest that a horse-shoe shaped feature could be an overturning lava lake. ️ Without this technology > interferometry which has made significant advances over the past twenty years this new information would not have been possible ~ since this allows us to combine light 🔆🔆 from two main mirrors in a telescope 🔭 so that it appears as if it is coming from a single mirror... 6d

maxwell_kerman Saturn's moon Titian with a moon in the background (I have no idea which one it is).one of the reasons why I love Saturn is because of its amazing moons since there are like over ten of them that are extremely interesting (and not small balls rock that are boring). Yet even some of Saturn's smaller moon are fascinating, particularly the one in the ring or interact with the rings. Then there is Titan with is thick atmosphere and the liquid methane river, lakes, oceans and rain. An other reason why I love Saturn is it seems we are all ways finding out something new about it from Cassini and the fact with all it moons and rings Saturn can make amazing photos like this one.

difermusic Going beyond the discovery and imaging of a young Jupiter, astronomers using the Gemini Observatory's new Planet Imager (GPI) have probed a newly discovered world in unprecedented detail.
The planet, known as 51 Eridani b, orbits its host star at about 13 times the Earth-Sun distance (equivalent to being between Saturn and Uranus in our Solar System). The system is located about 100 light years away. The Gemini data also provide scientists with the strongest-ever spectroscopic detection of methane in the atmosphere of a planet outside of our Solar System, adding to its similarities to giant planets in our Solar System.

universe.earth.photos "That looks interesting!" exclaimed a researcher, looking through data from a telescope. He had spotted something in a star system that many other telescopes had looked at before and missed. The statement marked the discovery of a new exoplanet in a young star system, only 100 light-years away. The exoplanet has a strong abundance of methane gas and other characteristics that are surprisingly similar to the biggest gas giant in our own Solar System, Jupiter. Scientists are hopeful that this exoplanet might give us additional clues about how our own dominant gas giant, and others, are formed.

The data came from the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), a newly installed instrument on the Gemini South observatory in Chile, which was designed specifically to seach for planets. It blocks out the light of a star to see the image of any planets that might be rolling around it.
