Scale Jupiter and Earth: 3D printed accurate scale model of the Earth (diameter = 0.80 cm) and Jupiter (diameter = 9.0 cm). Wonderful detail allowed by the 3D printing process reproduces the belting and storms in the Jovian atmosphere- note that the hundreds year old cyclone that is the Great Red Spot is more than twice the size of our home planet. Made by artist/maker Jay Fisher using images from NASA. northernforests Jupiter, Mars and the Moon during the night of May 24 - 25, 2016. Skies were clear but seeing was not good. Also imaged Saturn but wasn't good and not worth posting. Note the shadow transit if Jupiter's moon Europa above the north equatorial cloud belt. Also note two of the four Galilean moons, i. e. Europa and Io (left to right). Man, Mars is tough to image. This was the best I got with my setup. Imaging this planet definitely needs more practice and a more systematic approach. I'm new to Mars features but I believe the dark area pointing up in the center left of the image is the Syrtis Major Region. Syrtis Major is an ancient inactive shield volcano, which has already been identified by 17th century observers (!!) - most prominently by Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695). He used this feature to measure the rotation rate of Mars. Since Saturn didn't work out for me that night, I captured one quick video of the edge of the southern lunar highlands instead. The two big craters in the bottom left are Vlacq (89km, 3km) and Rosenberger (96km, 2.2km). The other feature east of that, which looks like a giant foot print with a line in the center is the ancient and heavily worn crater Janssen. It measures 190km across and 2.9 km deep and is marked by various other crater impacts. The line system is collectively referred to as the Rimae Janssen.

Images taken with the Celestron 8" Edge HD telescope and the Skyris132M monochrome camera (+Baader RGB filter set). Jupiter was imaged at 2032 mm focal length and Mars and the Moon at 4064 mm focal length. Image stacking was done in Autostakkert2! plus some processing in Photoshop.

solarrsystem Dione Divided || Dione appears cut in two by Saturn's razor-thin rings, seen nearly edge-on in a view from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. This scene was captured from just 0.02 degrees above the ring plane.

The bright streaks of Dione's wispy terrain (see PIA12553) are seen near the moon's limb at right. The medium-sized crater Turnus (63 miles, 101 kilometers, wide) is visible along Dione's terminator.

northernforests Testing my new Baader RGB color filters on Jupiter. Didn't have much time because clouds rolled on. Very happy with the result given the circumstances. Will get better in the future!

Celestron 8" Edge HD. Focal length 4064mm. Skyris132M imaging camera. Baader RGB filter set.

I imaged 60 sec per color channel at 20fps (low gain, high exposure). Histogram ~60%. May 17, 2016.

  •   klengmontero ..wow..hiw did you do that 1w
  •   northernforests @klengmontero you need a telescope and a video camera that can take many frames per second. The problem with taking photos of the planets is that you have atmospheric turbulences that will minimize the quality of the image. But every now and then there are also periods when the atmosphere is fairly steady. These are the frames you want to have. Then you have to process these “good” frames in a program such as “Autostakkert!2” in which you overlay the best images to get a decent final image. 1w

Jupiter, the most intriguing planet's in the solar system. It is amazing in the picture, but only in the motion Jupiter comes alive.
