reneeplains There are eight eggs . . . . a few more days and they will probably start sitting on the eggs. #gambelsquail average 10 - 12 eggs, laying one a day. They should hatch 21-23 days after the last egg is laid. 1w

grant_in_arizona Since those goofy Gambel's quail decided to make a "nest" (basically a depression caused from kicking out soil, 🙄) in my big talavera hen pot filled with the beautiful variegated geranium (Pelargonium, botanically-speaking) 'Mrs.Pollack', I've decided to start some stem cuttings of it in case it doesn't survive reduced watering while mamma bird sits in the eggs. . "Geraniums" are pretty easy to propagate via stem cuttings, especially in spring and autumn when it's not too warm or too cool. My "technique" is to cut off a five inch stem (13 cm), and remove the lower leaves and any flower buds (so the cuttings don't waste energy making flowers). I then put the cuttings in water overnight (like a flower arrangement) so they can stay hydrated. The next day I plant them directly in soil (50% soil-less potting mix and 50% perlite), and water them well. Nada mas (nothing more). I put the pot outside near the parent plant, but with a bit less direct sunshine (morning sun only if it's warm). Then I just water then when they're dry. They'll look sad for two or three weeks but usually perk up after a month when new roots are forming. My success rate isn't perfect (hence two cuttings today, hah) but it's enough. I have much, MUCH better success rooting geraniums (zonal and scented) directly in soil instead of water (mine usually rot in water, unlike coleus, impatiens, or ivy). What's your technique for propagating geraniums/pelargoniums? I'm happy and annoyed about the quail, hah. •   maggiesgardentx Fingers x'd for my cuttings Grant. They are so miserable. But I'm still trying post-shipping resuscitation. 2w
  •   grant_in_arizona Hope they work, @maggiesgardentx . If they don't look good within two more weeks send me a DM and I'll send another one with the base wrapped in wet paper towels. Go easy on humidity--they rot and get foliage issues easily, which I know you know. Good luck! 2w
  •   grant_in_arizona The flowers are a simple and single, @sonia_tafoya , and a nice very bright red. I only give cuttings a day in water to hydrate, then into soil. I have very very low success rooting pelargoniums/geraniums in water. Thanks for looking/commenting. Happy gardening! 2w
  •   maggiesgardentx Thanks Grant. It was that 7 days in shipping that did the damage. I've never known PO priority mail to take that long and we use it often. Bureaucracy at its finest 2w

rockin_renee SO YOU SEE THE BABY GAMBEL'S QUAIL?!? I thought it was strange these two birds with dingalings (i looked them up, it is called a topknot) on their head were hanging around paying extra attention to Kona...she was over in that area of the yard checking things out. She starts sniffing at something and then jumps up back away from it and then runs towards me. I think that is strange of her so I wander over and find a baby!!! #nature #birdsanctuary #justneedbutterflies #gambelsquail #whatelseamigoingtofindouthere 3w
