cambroguy The oldest reef built by animals were an integral part of the Cambrian Radiation. The main constructors were sponge-like animals called Archaeocyaths ("ancient cup") that built a calcareous coniform skeleton. A longitudinal section showing the conical shape is obvious in this sample from the Wilkawillina Limestone, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. A circular cross section of a cup can be seen as well. An important point is that the skeleton of Archaeocyatha was too delicate to resist wave action by themselves! In this regard the reef only exists because the Archaeocyatha are cemented together by calcareous microbes. You can see these here as dark thin rinds draping over the surface of the Archaeos, linking and binding them together. This microbial cementer is vital to provide wave resistance and topography for the reef... Interestingly the same can be said of all reefs through geological time- even today! Large specimen is ~7cm long.

art_of_jimi Personally theres always been something humbling & beautiful about the creatures of the past. I can't help but to have an intense curiosity about the earth when it was in its early stages and truly wild. I'll always be impressed by the power & beauty these extinct animals must have had. #draw #darwin #drawing #dinosaur #drawings #dinosaurs #triceratops #sketch #sketching #sketchbook #skeleton #skull #bones #biology #fossils #reptile #illustrator #illustration #ink #inkdrawing #anatomy #anatomical #anatomyart #science #scientific #scienceillustration #art #artist #artwork Still a work-in-progress, more to come! 8h
