Bodybuilding requires doors to be opened to the cellular rooms (MU recruitment) then the goal is to pack those cellular rooms out through both training (cell swelling) and diet (Carbohydrates/Glycogen) till the builders (Proteins) have to come in and make the rooms bigger. In this process the foremen (Fats) help keep the communication going.
Just for once forget about simply moving the weight.
Think about your levers, flex them and extend them.
When you flex them squeeze the working muscle as hard as you can, when you extend them create passive resistance and stretch the working muscle.
If you can't seem to do any of the above lower the weight until you can.
If you can't create muscular tension against resistance (or even without it) you honestly think by picking a weight up and move it from A to B you can develop optimal size hypertrophy and a hugely aesthetic balanced physique?

There is an inverse relationship when looking at load and maintaining tension on muscle tissue (bodybuilding). During myofibrilar phases this will naturally occur as the goal differs from cellular swelling and it’s to do with motor recruitment largely.
As lifters become better at maintaining this relationship and more experienced the ability to circumvent this inverse pattern becomes more apparent. (Why experienced bodybuilders can just 'lift' as muscles contract involuntarily to achieve the movements. This is a learned skill)
If your goal is what we term as sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (creating a shedload of cellular swelling basically). If you’re unable to maintain tension on the intended working muscle there is a high likelihood the load is too high thus defeating the object and goal of the workout. Also as Gray Cook put so very well 'If you load a dysfunction, it gets worse'. Long term patterns with excessive load create not only in this case aesthetic imbalances but both dysfunction and injury.

If you want to know more about Hypertrophy next week I have a few places left on my Hypertrophy camp in Leicester.
