Normal Los Angeles Modern Auctions
lamodernauctions #MakeYourMarkMonday -- The locus of the avant-garde in the 1960s Los Angeles art scene could be found in the "clean white cube" occupying a small storefront on La Cienega Boulevard: the Ferus Gallery. #EdMoses, one of the #CoolSchool artists, had his first solo show at Ferus in 1958, and has been a significant figure in contemporary art in Los Angeles ever since. This label is affixed to the back of a graphite work Moses created in 1965 as an ode to his wife Avilda. #ferusgallery #lamodernauctions 1w

"I reject the kind of art which self-consciously attaches itself to history. I'm not abstaining ... I simply can't relate to it. The longer I am at it, the less I want to look at my work historically. I view my art output as a simple variation on a theme. It was a theme that was established for me early on, all I do is watch it unfold as I go." Ed Ruscha 2w

jimnewberry Earlier this month I visited artist Ed Moses at his Venice, L.A. studio, to photograph him for the @KPCC-produced show The Frame. What at treat to meet and photograph him, see his workspace, and then to watch him at work painting with watercolors. You can here the interview by John Horn, and also see a slideshow of images I shot on the KPCC site: http://bit.ly/1LUpDZ6

There is a retrospective of Moses's work currently installed at @LACMA, up through August 2nd.

marjorievellart “Campbell’s Soup Cans” 1962 by Andy Warhol.
Is this art? What is art? Andy Warhol is saying, yes, this can be art. When on the shelf of your local grocer, Campbell’s soup is marketed to purchase, but when in a museum or Warhol’s studio it does change the meaning and make us think about it in different ways.
It has become an iconic image of the 1960’s contemporary pop culture. It renders an image that speaks about how our society has transitioned to mass production from the agrarian culture we once were. Mass production was the great equalizer of marketing reaching all people, rich or poor. Andy Warhol himself had Campbell’s Soup for lunch everyday for 20 years.
It does make you think.
Point of Interest: First flavour introduced by Campbell’s was tomato, in 1897.
Irving Blum of the prominent Ferus Gallery fame in Los Angeles, held on to the “32 Campbell’s Soup Varieties” until 1996 and now can be viewed at the @themuseumofmodernart #FerusGallery #AndyWarhol #PopArt #CampbellsSoup #massproduction #artnews #artbites #arttours #moma #loveart #NYC #LosAngeles #PopCulture #1960s

philophilia For the first time at MoMA, the 32 Soup Cans are shown in a line (rather than a grid), echoing the way they were first exhibited at the Ferus Gallery, Los Angeles, in 1962. "The Soup Cans mark a breakthrough for Warhol, when he began to apply his seminal strategies of serial repetition and reproduction to key subjects derived from American commodity culture. Warhol also developed his signature use of the flat, uniform aesthetic of photo-screenprinting just after he completed the Soup Cans." Andy Warhol: Campbell's Soup Cans and Other Works, 1953–1967 is now on view in the 2nd floor prints galleries. @themuseumofmodernart #StarrFigura #HillaryReder #MoMA #AndyWarhol #Warhol #CampbellsSoupCans #FerusGallery #LosAngeles #PopArt 3mon

gregmorris3 Happy belated birthday to this man. Frank Gehry is the most important living architect today. Frank Lloyd Wright, Phillip Johnson, Frank Gehry changed the way we looked at structures. An artists whose materials were concrete and steel, Gehry was also loosely part of the Ferus gallery gang that included Ed Ruscha, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston and Ed Kienholz. Perhaps the greatest architect of modern time, a simple look at the Bilboa Guggenheim or the new LV building cements it for me. #happybirthday #frankgehryarchitect #ferusgallery #guggenheimmuseumbilboa# #waltdisneyconcerthall #EMPmuseum #LAartists 5mon
