davepetillo This is my good friend John Lawrence's five string Warwick custom standard bass (four bolt on neck). The brass frets were dented up from playing and corrosion built up on the frets as well. I did what I always do when frets look this way, I micropolished them. The procedure involves the frets being polished from 400 grit sand paper all the way up to 10,000 grit lens paper (which polishes telescope lenses). The entire idea is to make the surface area so glass-like the metal string can resonate a clear true note with intonation clarity. I always use the example of the wine glass filled with liquid and the player rubs the rim…and the friction of that motion makes a note. You can image if the rim was rough, it would not be as reflective to carry the note. That is the principle with polishing the frets to so fine and flawless a gloss. John had a lot of crackling and intermittent signals on the long tube jack he would plug into. I had replaced it many times and still the crackling. I then took a fishman acoustic pickup jack with the screw-on strap button and wired that in and it has been fine ever since. I then turned in my lathe an African bubinga (so it matches the bubinga body) finishing washer to make up the extended jack tip. The next upgrade is the Petillo chrome bass strings. The Low A or B is a 140 diameter string. I believe I'm the only small manufacturer making that big of a string for electric basses. The size on the Warwick are 140, 105, 85, 65 and 45. #petillo #petilloguitars #luthier #guitarmaker #guitarbuilder #bassmaker #warwick #warwickcustomstandard #warwickbasses #fourstringbass #fivestringbass #bubinga #fishmanpickup #fishmanjack #switchcraft #byhand #craftsmanship #lathe #brass #frets #brassfrets #micropolish #johnlawrence #bassstrings #bigstring #fenderjazzbass #fenderpbass 8h
