Standing tall, raise your hands as high as possible overhead.
Begin to bend forward at the hips, while maintaining a flat back.
You should be able to get your upper body parallel to the floor.
If you can not get parallel or lose spinal integrity, you most likely have tight hips. Tight hips will limit your ability to perform any exercise that requires a hip hinge properly and safely. It will also limit your ability to perform common tasks like running and jumping. Stay tuned this week for help with those tight hips, including what to look for, a couple simple tests, a quick fix that will help you immediately, and exercises that will help improve your hip mobility.

Sit tall on the edge of a chair with your hands behind your head, forcing your elbows back.
While maintaining a flat back, elevate one foot off the floor as high as possible.
If you can not lift that foot off the floor at all or just a little while maintains a flat back, you most likely have tight hips. If your lumbar spine has to flex in order to lift the foot, you have tight hips. Tight hips will limit your ability to perform any exercise that requires a hip hinge properly and safely. It will also limit your ability to perform common tasks like running and jumping.
