justalilfact Just a lil Toast!

Toasting is said to have started with the ancient Greeks. They often used to spiked other drinks with poison.
And so, the clinking of the glasses apparently came from the fear of poisoning.
In fact, when you clinked glasses, some liquid would spill into the other glass showing you had no intention of poisoning the other person.
This custom has explained why "to your health" is the most common toast said world wide.
In greek it's "στην υγεία μας" stin ugeia mas which means 'to our health'. When it came to the term "toast", in the ale houses of Elizabethan England 16th century, spiced toast was dipped into the wine to:
1. Improve the flavour.
2. Absorb the sediment and dregs.
3. To make it healthier.
4. To mellow the flavour.

justalilfact Let's give Thanksgiving facts!

1. The first Thanksgiving celebration took place in Plymouth Colony (today it's Massachusetts) in 1621, and lasted for three days.
2. President Abraham Lincoln only then, declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of giving thanks. Congress only made Thanksgiving Day an official holiday in 1941.
3. The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first people to celebrate Thanksgiving.

4. The pilgrims didn't use forks to eat. Instead, they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers.
5. Did you know: Turkey missed being America's national symbol by one point. And Benjamin Franklin preferred turkey as the symbol and not the bald eagle . (Is this why it's tradition to eat turkey on Thanksgiving?) 6. Health fact: Turkey has more protein than chicken and beef

7. The writer of Mary Had a Little Lamb, Sarah Hale, apparently persuaded Abraham Lincoln to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. (Should've been Mary had a little turkey and some pumpkin pie) :p

8. Thanks giving was born in the USA, but Canadians also celebrate it on the 2nd Monday of October.

9. Thanksgiving was to give thanks for the previous year as well as the harvest.
10. Thanksgiving was traditionally a religious and cultural celebration, but today is celebrated regardless of their beliefs or culture.

11. Enlighten us with more Thanksgiving facts if you know one.
