anotherdaycalling It's so difficult to get a good angle that shows the progress of the new bridge construction on the A338 at Grove in Oxfordshire. This view is looking south towards Wantage from the north side of the railway line. The existing Victorian bridge can be seen to the right of the photo, & the concrete cast on site ongoing construction can be seen on either side of the track. To enable overhead electrification cables the new bridge will end up being 1.5 metres higher than the existing bridge. anotherdaycalling This video was taken on Thursday 4th February 2016. Primarily looking east towards Didcot from the top of the A338 bridge at Grove in Oxfordshire and shows the state of play of the concrete supports for the new higher bridge required for the Paddington to Bristol railway overhead electrification ! #ConcreteSupports #FirstGreatWestern #electrification #GroveA338 #GroveBridge #StationRoadGrove #WatageRoadstation #railway #intercity #FirstGreatWestern #concreteBridge #electrification 5d
  •   anotherdaycalling Do they have a common weakness that they suffer from ? 5d
  •   anotherdaycalling @joner37.mj helps if I tag you into the question ! 5d
  •   joner37.mj Not really, they are still good machines even though they are 40 years old. You have just got to be gentle with them. I drove them for 15 years and everyone power car is different to the other. They all act differently :) 5d
  •   anotherdaycalling @joner37.mj Is there a reason why some have a headlight out or is it as simple as the bulb has gone ? 5d
  •   joner37.mj When they are running in the day they have the daylight headlights setting on. This only has one light on the front of the set, usually the right hand side one. 5d
  •   anotherdaycalling @joner37.mj Why only one light, and what dictates which one is on ? 5d
  •   joner37.mj It's just the national safety standards I would assume. The right hand light is usually on the outside of the direction of travel, unless it's running wrong line or bi, directional track. Also there always has to be two red marker lights on the rear of fixed sets, or one on fright or normal rolling stock. 5d

networkrail Network Rail is delivering this £133m electrification project, funded by the Department for Transport and Transport for London The project will see four-carriage electric trains replace the existing two-carriage diesel trains in early 2018, helping to meet growing passenger demand. To find out more http://www.networkrail.co.uk/gobe/

Residents living close to the line – which covers 14 miles and runs through six different London boroughs – will also benefit from a reduction in CO2 emissions from the railway.

anotherdaycalling A lovely clear day has helped with the clarity of this photo on 01/02/2016. Taken from the top of the existing bridge on the A338, Station Road at Grove in Oxfordshire, looking east towards Didcot. It is being built by Bam Nuttall for Network Rail and has been cast in concrete in sections that are tied together with the steel rods that are seen protruding vertically. The finished bridge will be 1.5 metres higher than the existing road over rail bridge to cater for the Paddington to Bristol electrification ! #electrification #A338Grove #GroveA338 #GroveOxfordshire #GroveBridge #Oxfordshire #oxforshirehighways #NetworkRail #BamNuttall #railway #Wantage #rustySteel #bridge 1w

anotherdaycalling A gray day, makes this photo lifeless. Apart from the dumper truck, lights with generator, crane and road roller, today's progress has been that the interlocking steel sheeting has been cut down to the height seen. Cast concrete beams seen in a previous photo in my gallery have been used in a narrower bridge further west of this site, so the excitement of what the final bridge will look like is yet to come ! #NetworkRail #BamNuttall #A338Grove #GroveA338 #GroveBridge #GroveOxfordshire #electrification #Wantage #Oxfordshire #oxforshirehighways 2w

anotherdaycalling There is a lot of wind noise in the video. The view is looking east towards Didcot, with a First Great Western Intercity traveling west at about 70 mph towards Swindon. The video ends up looking north towards Oxford showing the ongoing construction of a new concrete bridge with the articulated concrete pump in use filling onsite constructed shuttering. All part of Network Rail's Paddington to Bristol electrification, the work on this site being carried out by Bam Nuttall ! #electrification #NetworkRail #BamNuttall #FirstGreatWestern #intercityHorn #intercityWhistle #intercity125 #125intercity #GroveA338 #GroveBridge #GroveOxfordshire #GreatwesternRailway #greatwesternelectrification #A338Grove #Wantage #WantageOxfordshire #concrete #concretePump #shutteringimages 3w
  •   carpathiantypefoundry Do all trains that pass sound their horn. If so does it get annoying? I wonder how many other bridges will need rebuilding as part of the electrification? 3w
  •   anotherdaycalling @carpathiantypefoundry In the early stages of negotiations with Network Rail's surveyor, I was told that there were 180 bridges that required "alterations". Some of the bridges are of special interest and had preservation orders on them, so all alterations would have to be in keeping. This particular bridge had nothing special going for it, and only like for like facilities had to be provided, eg no street lighting and no pavement; but Oxfordshire Highways are financially assisting the project, and so there will end up being a pavement over the new bridge, but no street lights. Every train traveling west has to "whistle" because there is footpath across the railway lines about a third of a mile further west of the bridge ! 3w
  •   carpathiantypefoundry Thank you for the detailed response. One bridge near me has had some work to its parapet but other than that no sign of anything else. I wait with baited breath that work will start around Twyford. 3w
  •   carpathiantypefoundry I guess by know you know each type of train by their 'whistle'. Speaking of 'whistles' do you get many stream excursions on the GWR main line? 2w

anotherdaycalling This was taken on 20-01-2016 looking east towards Didcot from the top of the Victorian road over rail bridge on the A338 at Grove on Station Road in Oxfordshire. The photo deliberately shows the existing bridge's coping stone to give a comparison of how high the concrete construction of the new bridge has reached. Required for Network Rail's Paddington to Bristol electrification the bridge will end up 1.5 metres higher than the existing one, with a life expectancy of 120 years. The work is being carried out by Bam Nuttall under contract to Network Rail ! #NetworkRail #BamNuttall #concretebridge #electrification #A338Grove #GroveA338 #GroveOxfordshire #GroveBridge #WantageOxfordshire #Oxfordshire #SteelSheeting #interlockingsteelsheeting #GWR #GreatwesternRailway #greatwesternelectrification #oxforshirehighways #civilengineering #railway #railwaytrack 3w

anotherdaycalling The clarity of the photo would not win any awards due to the low in the sky strong winter sun, and the majority of the photo is in the shade. It was taken from the top of the existing road over rail bridge at Grove in Oxfordshire, looking south on the A338 towards Wantage. The existing Victorian steel bridge seen on the right with its rivets is being replaced by Network Rail with a 1.5 metre higher bridge seen under construction on the left. The main point of the photo taken 20-01-2016 shows how high the type one sub aggregate is, compared to the already water stained vertical concrete finish. The work is being carried out by Bam Nuttal, who are under contract to Network Rail ! #NetworkRail #BamNuttall #concrete #concretebridge #Type1Aggregate #SteelBridge #electrification #concreteStain #stainedconcrete #A338Grove #GroveA338 #GroveA338 #GroveOxfordshire #GreatwesternRailway #greatwesternelectrification #VictorianBridge #winterSun #WantageOxfordshire #Oxfordshire #oxforshirehighways 3w
