weekendgirl This stuff is called fordite or detroit agate. When cars were being painted in the factories the stray spray would collect on floors and other machinery in layers. Eventually workers would have to chip it off and often brought it home to their families. This was cut into cabs by one of the dealers at the show yesterday and I'm so excited to finally have some! 1w

the_inspired_spirit Custom Personalized Silver and Blue Fordite Wrap in Sterling silver with the letter "J" . I love the idea of personalizing the piece this way! If you're interested in something similar, please let me know! #handmade #wirewrap #jewelry #pendant #fordite #detroitagate #initials #ooak #personalizedjewelry #customjewelry #madewithlove #theinspiredspirit ----------------------------------------------------------- I just love Fordite because it is literally a part of American history. It's actually old layers of paint from the Ford factory! When they'd spray the cars, paint would build up in the bays and on railings. When knocked off, you can see each individual color layer. Someone, at some point, had the brilliant idea of polishing these paint layers into cabochons to be used for jewelry! Just awesome! 2w

daniel.wisner I know I missed a few days of the #artjewelrychallenge but I had some things to attend to. Featured today, day 4, is a piece I made a few months ago, using #silver and #detroitagate. A wonderful "stone" made of many many layers of paint taken from car spray booths. #jewelry #jeweler #handmade #showmeyourrings #fine #instasmithy #instajewelrygroup #modern #fossil #gold #lovegoldlive #riojeweler #snagmember #vsco Check my link in bio for more information. 2mon

littleluneashley Any #Fordite fans?? This "Stone" os actually paint from the old ford factorys. As it ran off it formed all these beautiful layer of this stunning metallic paint. Now they use a different paint process (MUCH better for the environment!) So there is only so much of this beautiful material. This piece has a serious galaxy feel to one side and gorgeous stripes on the other side. Perfect for a pendant or just a display piece. Any Ford lover will want a tiny piece of Ford history after all ;) #Ford #Paint #DetroitAgate #DetroitFord #FactoryPaint 2mon

joycejoanne A very cool gift from my love. It's called "#Fordite" or #DetroitAgate It's basically years of over spray paint from the hand painting of new cars as they came down the line. It was painted and baked over and over creating many layers. They chipped it off of the tracks and buffed it into "stones". They don't paint cars like this any more so what is out there is it. #recycling into beauty! I'm glad I have a piece of automobile history. #loveit #itsthelittlethings #patrioticcolors make it cooler. #madeinamerica 2mon

live_long_june Why get your momma one, when you can get your momma two?? Custom fordite pendant. I know I've told ya before, but in case you're new, fordite is made of hundreds of layers of car paint. In the 50s, 60s, & 70s when they used to spray the cars to paint them in Detroit the over spray from the paint would get all over the place. They'd spray, bake, spray, bake, and on and on until over time those layers of paint would build up and stall the assembly line process. Workers would chip these hunks of paint off and somewhere along the line someone decided to cut them in to "stones." This is what the "rocks" look like when you cut and polish them from the side, showcasing the many layers. The previous picture is what happens when you cut and polish from the top. Supposedly if your reeeeeally good you can date your "rock" from the color of paint used on the cars. #themoreyouknow 2mon

Normal Geology Vignettes
a_geologist Pseudo-geological post: Detroit agate. These pretty "agates" are actually cut and polished layers of car paint. In the old car factories in Detroit, Michigan, layers of multi-colored paint accumulated in the factories where car parts were painted and baked (to harden the enamel paint). The paint deposits are now cut and polished and sold as "Detroit agate", "motor agate", or "Fordite". I actually wouldn't mind acquiring some "Ferrariite." (Photo from boredpanda.com) 2mon
