realfoodwithkids Someone told us almonds were peach seeds so we cracked the pit open and were surprised to find a tiny flat almond-looking seed. After taking tiny nibbles, which tasted like a shot of almond extract, I looked it up and found out they're toxic in high quanities [like, hundreds] because the contain cyanide. There goes my awesome idea for homemade almond extract #educationinthekitchen 22h
  •   heart_warmed Interesting, and good to know! 19h
  •   worthcooking There is instructions for it on penniless parenting and it addresses the toxicity. 19h
  •   krystelmatias Apricot seeds taste like amaretto and read somewhere that's what they use for the amaretto flavor. Anyways this whole seed thing is something i really need to look into because I always come across conflicting stories on them. Some people swear they're safe & very effective in preventing/ treating cancers & other swear they're poisonous. That goes for peach seeds, apricot seeds, apple seeds, & cherry seeds. I really wonder though... 19h
  •   tnuncio Well, actually... Now that I'm a parent I'm a little freaked out that my parents let me go inside the "candy lady's" house to buy candy unsupervised... But that was a different time I guess. 19h
  •   j_shay88 @kallie.schaefer just discovered this this week. (http://m.mentalfloss.com/article.php?id=31226) 19h
  •   jandrdeutscher They eat them in China. But for medicinal purposes such as tea, I'm told. 11h
  •   ettejeane I toss a few (kernals for apricots) into the bottom of the jar when I make apricot jam. Gives it a wonderful hint of almond. Been eating them for years, And im not dead yet! 4h

gabbys__mom #elderberry plant birds love it
grows #wild here, #cultivated for its #ornamental features
#gorgeous but considered #toxic
According to wikipedia the berries must be cooked before ingestion (people drink the juice) - otherwise metabolism turns this glycoside into #cyanide Yowza!

  •   fancyunicorndesigns @gabbys__mom that's what I've always said!! only along the quiet areas of Brooklyn and the Manhattan bridge and along the East River where you're far away from cars :) Sounds like Yves was adventurous ..David is the same way 22h
  •   fancyunicorndesigns @gabbys__mom I'm a big chicken on the other hand :) 22h
  •   gabbys__mom Me too! But I drive like the Dickens (😈) in Manhattan and I thought Id never do that! @fancyunicorndesigns but bike riding...not for me. I used to bike all over Staten Island but it's gotten really bad here to...too many cars, traffic lights, and impatient or brainless drivers. 22h
  •   fancyunicorndesigns @gabbys__mom yeah crazy drivers are everywhere :) do you come to Manhattan often? we are going to a dr who burlesque show this Wednesday and you are welcome to join :) 22h
  •   gabbys__mom Thanks Tanya. Sounds like fun. I go in for special occasions like Gabs birthday etc. Have some work being done here so cannot join you Wednesday but maybe next time. 😙 @fancyunicorndesigns have a great time! 21h
  •   fancyunicorndesigns @gabbys__mom I'll take a rain check :) 21h
