The Ebola virus kills nine out of ten of its victims so quickly and gruesomely that even biohazard experts are terrified. It is airborne, it is extremely contagious, and in the winter of 1989, it seemed about to burn through the suburbs of Washington D.C.

At Fort Detrick’s USAMRIID, an Army research facility outside the nation’s capital, a SWAT team of soldiers and scientists wearing biohazard space suits was organized to stop the outbreak of the exotic “hot” virus. The grim operation went on in secret for eighteen days, under unprecedented, dangerous conditions.

The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story in depth, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their outbreaks in the human race. From a remote African cave hot with Ebola virus, to an airplane over Africa that is carrying a sick passenger who dissolves into a human virus bomb, to the confines of a Biosafety Level 4 military lab where scientists risk their lives studying lethal substances that could kill them quickly and horribly, The Hot Zone describes situations that a few years ago would have been taken for science fiction. As the tropical wildernesses of the world are destroyed, previously unknown viruses that have lived undetected in the rain forest for eons are entering human populations. The appearance of AIDS is part of a larger pattern, and the implications for the future of the human species are terrifying.

The Hot Zone, a New York Times #1 nonfiction bestseller, has been published in more than 30 languages and has sold more then 2.5 million copies.

#StephenKing - The first chapter of The Hot Zone is one of the most horrifying things I’ve read in my whole life–and then it gets worse. That’s what I keep marveling over: it keeps getting worse. What a remarkable piece of work.

#LosAngelesTimesBookReview - A tour de force … Preston uses the power of simple narrative to drive deep his story’s urgent truths.

#MichikoKakutani, #TheNewYorkTimes - Riveting. . . . Swashbuckling reading.

#People - Popular science writing at its best and the year’s most infectious page-turner.

Currently, there is an Ebola outbreak taking place in #EquatorialAfrika, in the #DemocraticRepublicOfTheCongo, where the virus was first "discovered" in 1976 when the country was called #Zaire and from where the #EbolaRiver is located, which the virus gets its name from. According to the #WorldHealthOrganization, this outbreak is "unrelated" to those occurring along the cost of #WestAfrika, in the countries of #Liberia, #SierraLeone, and #Guinea. The alleged natural hosts of the Ebola virus are #FruitBats, and supposedly gorillas, porcupines, antelopes, and a few other animals in the area are susceptible to contracting the virus and transmitting it to humans. The perception is that #Afrikans contracted the virus through an animal and this is what is supposed to have given rise to this current outbreak, the most deadly Ebola outbreak, claiming more lives than all other outbreaks, dating back to 1976, combined. The #MillionDollarQuestion is, how could a virus which was "discovered" in #CentralAfrika find its way all the way over to the #WestSide of the #Continent without affecting any of the countries in between? It is of dire importance that it be understood that this is a #BiologicalWeapon, claiming physical casualties on our #MotherLand and psychological casualties throughout the #Diaspora. This phenomenon is not new in history and people only either joke or ignore its severity because they are simply unaware of the war being waged. Race is just one battle in the war, but nonetheless a battle that must be confronted and taken seriously. If not, we as a people, #AfrikanPeople, will become #Extinct, #Physically, #Culturally, #Historically, and otherwise.

#Ebola, the #BiologicalWeapon being used to decimate #WestAfrika, takes its name from the #EbolaRiver, from which it was "discovered" in 1976 in, what was then #Zaire (Presently the #DemocraticRepublicOfTheCongo). #CrimesAgainstHumanity #CriminalMinds #CreamOfThePlanetEarth #BioTerrorism #BiologicalWarfare #ScrambleForAfrika

MILESTONES: 1945–1952

Creation of Israel, 1948

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. U.S. President Harry S. Truman recognized the new nation on the same day.

Although the United States supported the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which favored the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had assured the Arabs in 1945 that the United States would not intervene without consulting both the Jews and the Arabs in that region. The British, who held a colonial mandate for Palestine until May 1948, opposed both the creation of a Jewish state and an Arab state in Palestine as well as unlimited immigration of Jewish refugees to the region. Great Britain wanted to preserve good relations with the Arabs to protect its vital political and economic interests in Palestine.

Soon after President Truman took office, he appointed several experts to study the Palestinian issue. In the summer of 1946, Truman established a special cabinet committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Henry F. Grady, an Assistant Secretary of State, who entered into negotiations with a parallel British committee to discuss the future of Palestine. In May 1946, Truman announced his approval of a recommendation to admit 100,000 displaced persons into Palestine and in October publicly declared his support for the creation of a Jewish state. Throughout 1947, the United Nations Special Commission on Palestine examined the Palestinian question and recommended the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state. On November 29, 1947 the United Nations adopted Resolution 181 (also known as the Partition Resolution) that would divide Great Britain’s former Palestinian mandate into Jewish and Arab states in May 1948 when the British mandate was scheduled to end. Under the resolution, the area of religious significance surrounding Jerusalem would remain a corpus separatum under international control administered by the United Nations.
  •   dhuntiqam Although the United States backed Resolution 181, the U.S. Department of State recommended the creation of a United Nations trusteeship with limits on Jewish immigration and a division of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab provinces but not states. The State Department, concerned about the possibility of an increasing Soviet role in the Arab world and the potential for restriction by Arab oil producing nations of oil supplies to the United States, advised against U.S. intervention on behalf of the Jews. Later, as the date for British departure from Palestine drew near, the Department of State grew concerned about the possibility of an all-out war in Palestine as Arab states threatened to attack almost as soon as the UN passed the partition resolution.

Despite growing conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Palestinian Jews and despite the Department of State’s endorsement of a trusteeship, Truman ultimately decided to recognize the state Israel. 2d

#SaddamHussein goes on trial in #Baghdad for #CrimesAgainstHumanity.

The trial was viewed by many as a #kangaroocourt or show trial. #AmnestyInternational stated that the trial was "unfair,"and Human Rights Watch noting that Saddam's execution "follows a flawed trial and marks a significant step away from the rule of law in Iraq." Saddam was captured on 13 December 2003. He remained in custody by United States forces at Camp Cropper in Baghdad, along with eleven senior Ba'athist officials. Particular attention was paid during the trial to activities in violent campaigns against the Kurds in the north during the Iran–Iraq War, against the Shiites in the south in 1991 and 1999 to put down revolts, and in Dujail after a failed assassination attempt on 8 July 1982, during the Iran–Iraq War. Saddam asserted in his defense that he had been unlawfully overthrown, and was still the president of Iraq.

He rejected the tribunal's legitimacy and independence from the control of the foreign occupation. "I do not respond to this so-called court, with all due respect to its people, and I retain my constitutional right as the president of Iraq", Saddam declared. He added, "Neither do I recognize the body that has designated and authorized you, nor the aggression because all that has been built on false basis is false." When the judge asked for his name, Saddam refused, stating "I am the president of the Iraq". He returned the question, asking Kurdish judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin, "Who are you? I want to know who you are." When Amin addressed Saddam as "the former president", Saddam objected emphatically, saying he was still the President of the Republic of Iraq and had not been deposed.

5 November 2006,Saddam was sentenced to death by hanging.
26 December, Saddam's appeal was rejected and the death sentence upheld. No further appeals were taken and Saddam was ordered executed within 30 days of that date. The date and place of the execution were secret until the sentence was carried out. Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging on 30 December 2006. With his death, all other charges were dropped.
