derek_hutch A #GreatEgret (#ArdeaAlba) fishing along the banks of the #FeatherRiver in #YubaCity, #California. With populations distributed across North and South America as well as some locations in Europe, the Great #Egret, also known as the #CommonEgret or #GreatWhiteHeron, was almost hunted to extinction in the nineteenth century due to a large demand for its long white feathers for fashion and decoration. Some of the first conservatory laws protecting birds allowed the populations to recover over time.

nature_enthusiast__ This is a Great Egret in flight (also known as the Common Egret, but I call it a Great Egret because birds are pretty great!) I took this picture at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge on a birding trip earlier this month. #bird #birds #birding #birdwatching #birdnerd #CommonEgret #Egret #Michigan #GreatEgret #Shiawassee #ShiawasseeNationalWildlifeRefuge #heron #wetlands #wildlife #summer #shorebirds #ornithology #nature #naturelover #outdoors #hiking 4w

photogmb The #greategret (#Ardea alba), also known as the #commonegret, #largeegret or (in the Old World) #greatwhiteheron, is a large, widely distributed #egret. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, in southern Europe it is localized. In North America it is widely distributed, and it is ubiquitous across the Sun Belt of the United States and in the Neotropics. The Old World population is often referred to as the #greatwhiteegret. This species is sometimes confused with the great white heron of the Caribbean, which is a white morph of the closely related great blue heron (A. herodias). 4mon
