thegreatmoviebuff So here are the two winners of the first round for the Coen Bros part of this tournament! Honestly I didn't know which ones were going to win because I've haven't seen any of them, and had heard generally the same positive things about each one. The next round will start tomorrow at the same time as usual! 2d

filmtrivia1000 While (There Will Be Blood) was filming on location in Marfa, Texas, (No Country For Old Men) was the neighboring film production● One day, director (Paul Thomas Anderson) and his crew tested the pyrotechnical effects of the oil derrick fire, causing an enormous billowing of smoke. The smoke intruded on the shot that (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen) were shooting for (No Country)● This caused The Coens to delay filming until the next day when the smoke dissipated. Both (There Will Be Blood) & (No Country For Old Men) were the leading contenders for best picture at the Academy Awards a year and a half later●

  •   vissiatim Was it good 2d
  •   zach_is_nobody @vissiatim eh... sorta... Not sure what point they were tryin to or that they knew lol... Also I can't see the average American, especially a teenager, loving it... But if you love films & their history you will probably enjoy it... if you ever saw The Artist, though that's a modern silent film, it reminded me if that... or if you saw The Majestic w/ Jim Carey... not sure of your tastes, but I'd say hold off unless you just really love the history of films 2d
  •   vissiatim Cool thanks. I'll probably watch it Cause I like George Clooney. 2d

filmtrivia1000 With the exception of the gas station cashier who guesses correctly on the coin flip, the woman who works in the office at the trailer park, the female motel clerk, & the children at the end-Anton Chigurh kills or tries to kill every person he speaks to during the film◆The Coen brothers sought to cast someone who didn't look like they were from West Texas to avoid a sense of identification. When the Coens approached (Javier Bardem) he said "I don't drive, I speak bad English, and I hate violence". Javier took the role because his dream was to be in a Coen Brothers film◆ The Coens got the idea for Chigurh's hair style from a book Tommy Lee Jones had. It featured a 1979 photo of a man sitting in the bar of a brothel with very similar haircut and clothes as Anton. They instructed the hair stylist to create a "strange and unsettling" hairstyle. It was also inspired by the mop tops of the English warriors in the Crusades, as well as some haircuts of the 1960s.
When Javier first saw his new haircut he said "Oh no, now I won't get laid for the next 2 or 3 months". He also said that the due helped him to get into character◆Anton occasionally gives his victims a second chance by flipping a coin and letting fate decide if he should spare them or not. Similar to the DC Comics character (Harvey Dent) who later becomes the Batman villain Two Face● Read the comments for the rest of the trivia #AntonChigurh #Anton #Chigurh #NoCountryForOldMen #CormacMcCarthy #JavierBardem #Bardem #NoCountryForOldMan #JoelCoen #EthanCoen #CoenBrothers #TheCoenBrothers #TheCoens #Coens #CoenBros #TheCoenBros #JoelEthanCoen #JoelAndEthanCoen #MovieTrivia #FilmTrivia #FunFact #FunFacts #TheMoreYouKnow #DidYouKnow #MovieFacts #FilmFacts #MovieVillain #MovieVillains #NeoWestern #SuspenseThriller

  •   filmtrivia1000 Mark Strong auditioned and was the runner up for the role of Anton Chigurgh◆ Anton's weapon is a captive bolt pistol. The principle behind captive bolt stunning is a forceful strike on the forehead using a bolt to induce unconsciousness. The bolt may or may not destroy part of the brain. It's commonly used to kill cows before slaughter without risk of flying bullets.
The captive bolt pistol was invented in 1903 by Dr. Hugo Heiss, former director of a slaughterhouse in Straubing, Germany◆ The silencer on Anton's shotgun was specially made for the movie. Such a device didn't exist◆ In the novel, Aton is depicted as having a great deal of endurance, such as being capable of withstanding pain from multiple shotgun blasts, or from a fractured arm◆When the author of the book (Cormac McCarthy) visited the set, the actors inquired about Chigurh's background and the symbolic significance of his name. McCarthy simply replied, (I just thought it was a cool name)◆Javier Bardem's victory at the 80th Academy Awards in 2008 made him the first Spanish actor to win an Oscar◆In the book Chigurh returns the stolen money and begins a working relationship with the money's original owner◆Aton Chigurh has been added to numerous lists of greatest villains, most notably in Empire Magazine's List of the 100 Greatest Movie Characters Of All Time 2d

moviereviews7 Bridge of Spies ~ PG-13 ~ 2015 ~ #StevenSpielberg #TomHanks #MarkRylance #AlanAlda #JoshuaHarto #AustinStowell #WillRogers #AmyRyan The true story of an American lawyer who was hired to defend an accused Russian spy during the Cold War. Trust me when I tell you there's a lot more to the story of this film, I just think that's the best way to summarize it without any spoilers. So when you have a movie starring Tom Hanks, written by the Coen brothers, & directed by Steven Spielberg, it's virtually impossible to go wrong. Going into this, I was a bit worried that this would be like "Lincoln", where it would be an excellent movie that is slowly paced with a low rewatchability factor. That was far from the case, as the dialogue made each scene compelling & interesting to watch. The story was very well written, developing the characters & their relations with one another terrifically. All of the performances were great, especially those of Hanks & Rylance, although I wouldn't consider either Oscar-worthy. The cinematography was amazing, & Spielberg did a great job directing as always. The score was good & the conclusion was very satisfying. Seems like a perfectly made movie, right? It would be if not for one element that I personally believe has been missing in Spielberg's movies since "War of the Worlds", which is the 'wow' factor. There's nothing to this movie that really stands out. It's easily forgettable. It doesn't have anything to it that sticks with me. It's just a plain good movie. Nevertheless, it's still a very good film well worth your time & definitely deserves the consideration among best pictures of the year 2015. 4.5/5 #BridgeofSpies #Coenbros #JoelCoen #EthanCoen #sovietspy #Russia #America #Powell #Abel #standingman #JamesBDonovan #spy #coldwar #truestory #drama #movie #film #moviereview 3d
  •   sorenthe_hero_117 Bridge of Spies: the Lincoln of 2015. A movie that was genuinely great, but nobody saw. Ironically enough both this and Lincoln were directed by Spielberg 3d
  •   jfmahanes Great movie! One of my favorites of 2015. Mark Rylance is well worth the Oscar nod, but Sylvester Stallone is the clear winner for Creed. I saw it in November in theaters and it actually still sticks with me. Maybe it's because of its beautiful score or just the fact that the subject matter really interests me. 3d
  •   jwrenaud2 What Best Picture films have you missed so far? 2d
  •   moviereviews7 @jwrenaud2 I only have Brooklyn & Big Short left to view. I plan to see both before the Academy Awards. 2d
  •   jwrenaud2 Big Short is my prediction to take it all, wbu? 2d
  •   moviereviews7 @jwrenaud2 I think it's an open race. Realistically, I think Spotlight will win, but I'm hoping for Room or Revenant to make a surprise steal. 2d
