citytech_strive " When I was 15 years old, I came to the United States from Haiti. When I was in Haiti, I didn't really know myself. I was pretty much living life but didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. I loved science and I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field. But because there wasn't many opportunities in Haiti in the medical field, I didn't know what to do. I went to school because my parents told me to. There was no true motivation for me to go to school. I was living with my mom and my sisters in Haiti. My dad lived in St. Martin. I didn't really know my dad that well. The first time I met my dad was when I was 5 years old. My mom had gotten into a major car accident and she lost her right arm. My dad came to see us despite not having a green card. The day before he came to Haiti, all of his paperwork came in so it worked out for him. When I found out I was moving to America with my dad, I was really scared to see him. I would only rely on my sisters. My sisters were pretty much my "mom". I used to be a Chemical Technology major when I got to college. When it was my last semester for my major, my analytical chemistry professor told me about about a program called, "Emerging Scholars". I asked for an application and I got in. Later on, my Chemistry professor told me he worked at AMNH and he needed students for research. I told my professor that I wanted to do research at the museum. He told me to come in for an interview. I went to the interview and he asked me when I can start working. I told him as soon as possible but I also told him that I'm doing this research for the Honors Program. The professor was fine with that. After doing the research work, I decided that I wanted to work in a lab rather than in a hospital because I realized that I'm afraid of blood. I decided to change my major to Biomedical Informatics. Because I came to United States, I finally had options and opportunities to succeed in life. I finally had goals in my life". "Don't let people or a new environment change you. Just Be Yourself". #SOCT16 #cunys4s #citytech 20h

citytech_strive " When I was 10 years old, I came to America from the Dominican Republic. I struggled with my English class in 5th grade because I could barely understand or speak English very well. One day, my English teacher whose name was Mr. T asked me to stay after class. He pretty much told me to don't try in his class and that I wasn't going to succeed in life. He told me to give up. That same day I told my mom what my teacher said and I told her that I didn't want to go back to school. The next day I went to school with my mom and we looked for English courses. I started taking daily after school English courses that would end at 6. When the English Statewide Test was coming up, I was nervous because I didn't know if I was going to pass it. I ended up passing the test. My mom told me, " You should always believe in yourself and never doubt your ability to learn something new". That quote still motivates me to accomplish all of my challenges". "Don't ever let anyone's opinion determine your future. Always believe in yourself and if you need help, look for it". #SOCT16 #cunys4s #citytech 4d
