pglee54 This is one of the #Roman carved stones that was originally used in #Hexhamabbey's construction. Found face down in 1881, it's an almost 3metre tall #memorial to Flavius a #soldier of the #cavalry #regiment of Petriana (Stanwix in #Cumbria) and standard bearer of the Candidus, aged 25 and of 7 years service. He is busy trampling a #briton (actually a #pict)who was of high status as he has a short #sword.

napoleonic_france 1er Chevau Legers Polonais de la Garde Imperiale. When people speak of the Polish Lancers, they often just think of men on horseback that happen to have lances. But, these men were much more than just men on horseback with lances! They were easily described as one of Napoleon's best cavalry units, as they could move fast paced either around an enemy, or right to em. Most cavalry would avoid a frontal assault on infantry because of the infantry bayonet. But the Polish Lancers had... Lances! A very very long pole with a very very sharp end is definitely longer than a mans rifle and bayonet. At high speeds these men could instantly kill a man on impact with little to no effort (provided he didn't drop his lance on the way there, which was much more common than you may think of trained soldiers). These men are men you must fear. You're dead if you don't. #France #Napoleon #napoleonicwars #horse #cavalry #lance #history #militaryhistory #warfare #polish #lancers #lance #poland #fearordie #lightcavalry #speed 19h
