moviesmike "Be Yourself. The world worships the original". So said legendary Swedish born actress Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982) who certainly achieved that in her life. Working at 18, a star in Sweden at 21, debuted in America in Hollywood's greatest year 1939. She was the biggest actress in the world by the time she was 30, almost washed up in scandal by 35, finally returning to the world stage greater than ever at 40. Top producer David O Selznick brought her to America for a remake of her Swedish hit "Intermezzo". Her unique - - - - vs Hollywood - natural look immediately caught the attention of audiences. It was the classic "Casablanca" followed by her career defining performance in Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls"* that would take her to the top and reward her with her first of 7 Oscar nominations. Both were major hits. The classics continued winning her first Oscar for "Gaslight", nominated again for "The Bells of St. Mary's" with the biggest male star of the forties Bing Crosby and then there was Hitchcock's "Spellbound" and "Notorious". In between was the smash with audiences, but flop with critics "Saratoga Trunk". These were her biggest years commercially. A Top 10 box-office star in 46-48 and just outside in 44,45,57- 59. "Joan of Arc" (Oscar nominated) was just released when the biggest movie star scandal in years hit. Bergman (America's Joan of Arc and Sister Mary) a married mother, runs off with Italian director Roberto Rossellini also married and even worst she is having his child. Her career is officially over in the USA and she is exiled but working in Europe. Returning to Hollywood in 1956 she wins her second Oscar with another great performance as "Anastasia". "Indiscreet", "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness", "The Yellow Rolls-Royce" and "Cactus Flower" into the 60's continuing her success. She achieved a record 3rd Academy Award as one of the all star cast in the smash "Murder on the Orient Express". Her final cinema performance in "Autumn Sonata" is also the occasion of her 7th Oscar nomination and her first teaming with the legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. In her centenary year Bergman remains a true original to be worshipped. 15h
