penguininthepocket “Cannery Row in Monterey in California is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream. Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses." - John Steinbeck, Cannery Row ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Today the old canneries are housing for example this huge aquarium - Monterey Bay Aquarium, where you can easily spend hours inside exploring the ocean wonders. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #monterey #canneryrow #cannery #montereybayaquarium #mondolehti #lonelyplanet #visualcrush #visualcoop #visualsoflife #exploring_the_earth #exploretocreate #sharetravelpics #wheninroams #mytinyatlas #tasteintravel #traveldeeper #savorthejourney #passingby #searchwandercollect #neverstopexploring #holdthemoments #artventurers

haywardthrives The Hunt Brothers Cannery was opened in Hayward in 1895 by brothers William and Joseph Hunt. They selected Hayward because it had hundreds of fruit orchards and agricultural fields.

Back in those days, Hayward was a small town of a few thousand people, but known throughout the region as an agricultural powerhouse. The Hunts initially packed local fruit, including cherries, peaches, and apricots; then added tomatoes which became the mainstay of their business.

At its height in the 1960s and 1970s, Hunt’s Hayward plant was the largest fruit and vegetable canning facility in the world. It had 5,000 employees and handled up to 12 million pounds of tomatoes a day.

Hunt's operated three canneries in Hayward, at A, B, and C Streets; an adjacent can-making company; a pickling factory; and a glass manufacturing plant. The 99-acre plant complex stretched for 1.5 miles through northern Hayward along the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks.

From the 1890s until 1981, the air around Hayward was permeated by the smell of tomatoes for three months of each year during the canning season.

The canneries closed in 1981, as there were no longer enough produce fields or fruit orchards near the cannery to make it economically viable. Much of the production was moved to the Sacramento Valley.

The location of the former canneries is marked by a historic water tower with the Hayward logo. A large community park and new housing developments now occupy much of the former cannery site.

In 2000, the City of Hayward had the Hayward logo painted on the Tower. It stands to this day as a proud symbol of Hayward’s past, and of a city leaning forward to the future.

onlymekimberly If you've been in Steveston, but not ventured past the village on the boardwalk, you do yourself a disservice. Britannia Shipyards feels like a sacred site. So much history & if you listen closely, I swear you can hear the sounds of yesteryear & feel the souls of the people who worked & lived there. These stilt houses (restored now) were once the homes of some the workers here. Also on site are the First Nations bunkhouse, Chinese workers bunkhouse & the seine netloft (among other buildings). I could have stayed here for hours but for the hubbub of lots people there bc of a wedding happening on site. For sure I'll be back to spend time in the buildings that are open to the public. #StevestonBC #BritanniaShipyards #Historicalsite #reflections #BeautifulBritishColumbia #VancityBuzz 3d
  •   onlymekimberly That's the best time @circleinasquare01 It's a 35-40 minute drive for me but I think next time I'll leave even earlier & aim to get there around 8:30. Should give me plenty of time to sit & appreciate all that is. 3d
  •   indulge_with_mimi Sooo quaint and beautiful. Do you just walk past the village ,for how long? 3d
  •   onlymekimberly It's about 10 minutes I think. Past Number 1 Rd you'll see the boardwalk to your right. Just keep walking. You'll see the netloft buildings and bunkhouses & these are tucked in to the left a bit farther up. It's an incredibly special place. @indulge_with_mimi 3d
  •   indulge_with_mimi Thank you ♡ what a great intro 3d
