Normal Iokepa Casumbal-Salazar
iokepakepa The #KamasiWashington show at #GrandPerformances last night was amazing. The evening's program, entitled, "65-92: The Rhythm Changes but the Struggle Remains the Same," commented on anti-black racism, histories of oppression, and state violence, revolution and justice, memory and affect. DJ Battlecat introduced the set with a mosaic of jazz and hip-hop samples that segued nicely into writer, director, and actor Roger Guenveur Smith's brilliant performance of Rodney King's iconic "can we all get along" speech. This, followed by vocalist Patrice Quinn's narrative commentary on legacies of black struggle in America, which set the evening's tone: words to music, dialogue and reflection. Her refrain, "it's more than a riot," was punctuated when the band kicked things off playing Charles Mingus' "Fables of Faubus." An OG protest song and critical statement on Jim Crow racism, the piece was composed in 1958 as response to Arkansas governor Orval Faubus' deployment of the state's National Guard a year earlier, to prevent the integration of Little Rock High School by nine students. From hard bop to hip-hop, the band - two really, sharing the stage, but splitting duties by genre - would oscillate between forms, pausing for Quinn's spoken, analytic interludes. With guest appearances by Pharcyde, Myka9, and several emerging emcees, the West Coast Get Down just killed versions of classics by Dexter Gordon, Snoop Dogg, Gerald Wilson/El Chicano/Kid Frost, Ice Cube, Eric Dolphy, Tupac, Eddie Harris, Cypress Hill, and others. Just dope, inspiring... Really got me thinking... And dancing. All set to a lovely summer dusk in #DowntownLA. This #EpicTour they're about to take is gonna be fantastic. #Aftershocks Series #CaliforniaPlaza #WattsRebellion #LAUprising #RodneyKing #Jazz #HipHop 4d
