chrisrandall306 The Farnam Block, located on the SW corner of Broadway Avenue and 11th Street, is a key architectural feature of Broadway Avenue, an example of the building frenzy that took place in Saskatoon during its development boom of 1912 – 1913. Not only did Saskatoon’s downtown experience a building boom but also Nutana and in particular Broadway Third Avenue United Church - Saskatoon, SK.

Arlington Ingalls Farnam, a real –estate speculator, hoped to cash in on the boom and bought these two lots in 1911 for the sum of $8,000. City Hall Building Records tell us that he spent $20,000 on his brick building which was to house offices and stores. Rumour has it that he had wanted to build a hotel but was blocked by the Temperance Movement. He employed the newly formed Anglo- American architectural firm of Bugenhagen and Turnbull. [George Bugenhagen, an American, had arrived in Saskatoon between 1909 -1910. Frederick Turnbull, an Englishman from Tyneside, had arrived around 1911]. The firm also designed the Smith Block which currently is home to ‘Calories Restaurant’ and a clothes boutique.

The Farnam Block is unique in Saskatoon for its below street-level business premises which are entered from the exterior. Also of interest is the semi-circular pediment above the front entrance with the name of the building and its date of construction inscribed inside it.

Farnam lived in his building for two years but then seems to have disappeared from the scene.
Until the late 1960’s, the Farnam Block had always seen a mix of residential and commercial use and in the earlier years was a favourite of dressmakers and tailors. Various barbershops operated out of the basement from 1921 – 1975, including Nicholas Wawryks’ Nutana Barbershop form 1942-1975. There have been other memorable tenants. The Nutana Catholic Church held church services in the basement from 1916- 1919 before St. Joseph’s Church was built; well-known photographer, John Gibson, operated his photographic studio out of one of the basement premises from 1926- 1957.(written by Peggy Sargeant) #yxe #nutana #saskatoon #heritage #builtheritage #1912

kristiekearney This is the final photo (5/5) of the B&W challenge. These carvings/etchings are on a wall inside the Male Holding Cell of the Hartley Court House, Hartley Historic Site, NSW. Built in 1837, this holding cell has housed convicts, bushrangers such as John Vane and many other criminals. The walls inside the cells feature hundreds of carvings such as this one which is my favourite. Featuring the penal colony Van Diemens Land (now Tasmania) and Norfolk Pines from another once penal colony Norfolk Island, historians believe that these carvings were done by a convict who once set foot on these two harsh and unformidable convict prison sites. I nominate @erinkhanlon for the B&W challenge. #hartley #hartleyhistoricsite #hartleycourthouse #history #convict #convicts #vandiemensland #norfolkisland #norfolkpine #maleholdingcell #prisoncell #prison #heritage #nswheritage @insidehistory @natgeo @visitbluemountains @visitnsw #nswnpws @lithgow2790 #bluemountains #courthouse #bushranger #johnvane #australianhistory #builtheritage #penalcolony 2mon
