fluxphoto This beautiful little creature is the Laughing Kookaburra. One of the things that I fell in love with about Australia is the amount of exotic wildlife that was everywhere. Cockatoos flying around in Sydney, kookaburras everywhere, cool bugs, look up a tree and hey theres a koala, wild lorikeets, huge bats, rivers with crocodiles, dingos, fields of kangaroos or driving some obscure road and woah theres an echidna crossing the road! It was an incredible and fascinating experience to see so many amazing animals just roaming free. The laughing kookaburra was by far one of my favorites. Which for a bird to be a favorite creature of mine is a big deal, birds kind of creep me out, but that's a whole other story :) They have one of the most unique calls that I have ever heard made by a bird. I'm fact for about half our trip I was very confused because I thought that there were monkeys everywhere! Australia doesn't have apes or monkeys native to the area. It wasnt until we got out of Sydney that I finally asked someone if there were monkeys in Australia, "no mate" the man says "those are blasted kookaburras!" Apparently they can get pretty annoying when they congregate in large numbers and make their call nonstop. Once I finally realized where the sound came from I couldn't understand how such a big noise could come from such a small bird! Once we returned to the states I started doing some research on these amazing creatures and they became even more fascinating. So with that...kookaburra fun facts! Kookaburras make loud long calls that sound like laughter, hence the name. The calls are made to mark their territory. Kookaburras are the largest of the kingfishers. They mate for life often living in pairs or small family groups. Older siblings often help the parents with the next clutch of eggs. Average lifespan is about 20 years. They are carnivorous, eating snakes, mice, the young of other birds, insects and small reptiles. They get all their moisture from their food and so never need to drink water. They nest in hollow trees or termite mounds. #australia #australia_nsw #australiagram #australiansummer #sydney #kookaburra #laughingkookaburra #bird #wildlife #nature 2d
