deerbeck Easter in Burgenland 2: I have been to my fair share of wineries in Italy, both traditional and high-end-snazzy. And so I can confirm: Scheiblhofer in Andau, Burgenland, is SNAZZY! And I love their 2012 Blaufränkisch Jois 3w

  •   deerbeck @oliveroth I made my way through.... 8, maybe? And we bought four bottles, so, excited to try them with some food soon! 3w
  •   deerbeck @croma23 @oliveroth @croma23 @scott_foodie what makes it extra surprising and impressive it that's in the middle of some very modest-looking countryside... Let's just say, I REALLY wasn't expecting it! I also never saw a wine tasting/selling estate that was 100% self-service: all their bottles are out there for you to take and help yourself to, open (and chilled where necessary), hundreds of wine glasses for you to grab, still and sparkling water, little snacks, all free of charge and with no one there to watch over you... You can literally take all the time you want, trying it all you want. Such a relaxed atmosphere! Just mad Excited about our 4 purchased bottles! 3w
  •   croma23 Ally that sounds AMAZING! Always nice when someone institutes an honor system that adds to the overall feel of a place :) very European ;) 3w

deerbeck I spent Orthodox Easter in the best way this year! First we went birdwatching in Apetlon, then winery hopping in Andau, and finally for some steamy cappuccinos at my new favourite spot: the lighthouse at Podersdorf am See. It was a perfect Sunday, so I'm ready for you, Monday! Bring it on. But for now - a few snapshots from today!

Easter in Burgenland 1: as soon as I saw the road sign welcoming us to Apetlon, I realized that I had been there before. At the time I was 17 years old and on a Biology class field trip. I believe the aim of the week-long excursion had something to do with collecting water samples, but - in all honesty - all I remember was being obsessed with Hoobastank's "The Reason" and listening to it on repeat with my best friend Nina in the garden, and then - towards the end of the week, while on a crucial final sample collection mission - falling out of my thigh-high waders, straight into the smelliest, grossest swamp you can immagine, near the Lange Lacke nature reserve. After that I was pretty much done, and I had to be brought back to the farm where we were staying. But I was too stinky and dirty to be transported back by bus, so they stuck me into the trunk of some guy's mini van instead. Bless Nina: she was clean and still smelled like Yves Saint Laurent's "Baby Doll", but she got right into that trunk with me 👭
