yazcountry Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland.
May 11, 2015.
On September 17, 1862, over twenty-three thousand soldiers were killed or wounded, most during close-range combat, at Antietam during the "the bloodiest one day battle in America." Although no decisive victory was determined on the battlefield, the Confederate retreat into Virginia that night proved a strategic victory for the Union. Five days later, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, effective January 1, 1863, freeing slaves in Southern states and making the abolition of slavery, officially, a chief aim of the Civil War.

yazcountry The Sunken Road, a dirt farm lane which was used primarily by farmers to bypass Sharpsburg and worn down by rain and wagon traffic, became known as Bloody Lane as the outnumbered but well-positioned Confederate division held this position for 3-and-a-half hours against an advancing Federal soldiers. 5,500 soliders were killed or wounded at the Bloody Lane.

This c. 1836 stone bridge across the Antietam Creek remains one of the most-iconic extant visual elements of the Civil War.

  •   e_burroughs So jealous. There's something so strangely beautiful and ironic about the peace and stillness of battlefields. 1d
