joehilwashngton #JeanBaptistePointduSable (Point de Sable, Point au Sable, Point Sable, Pointe DuSable)
(1750 – August 28, 1818)
first permanent resident of what became #Chicago, #Illinois.
Little is known of his life prior to the 1770s. In 1779, he was living on the site of present-day #MichiganCity, #Indiana, when he was arrested by the #Britishmilitary on suspicion of being an #AmericanSympathizer in the #AmericanRevolutionaryWar.
In the early 1780s he worked for the British lieutenant-governor of Michilimackinac on an estate at what is now the city of #StClair, #Michigan, before moving to settle at the mouth of the #ChicagoRiver. He is first recorded living in Chicago in early 1790, having apparently become established sometime earlier. He sold his property in Chicago in 1800 and moved to #StCharles, #Missouri, where he died on August 28, 1818.

Point du Sable has become known as the "#FounderofChicago". In Chicago, a school, museum, harbor, park and bridge have been named, or renamed, in his honor; and the place where he settled at the mouth of the Chicago River in the 1780s is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, now located in #PioneerCourt.

ceadleiriu 74 - The USS Intrepid at Pier 86: the vessels of the US Navy are much larger than those in Commodore John Barry’s time.

In 1745, Barry (no relation) was born in County Wexford. On moving to America, he joined the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War, serving with distinction and winning many naval battles. He was the first commissioned naval officer, at the rank of Commodore, in the new United States Navy. President George Washington conferred him with his commission in 1797. He has been called “The Father of the American Navy”. Amongst many memorials the Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, was named after him as Barry helped found the adjacent Brooklyn Navy Yard.

About three bad brothers you know so well
It started way back in history
With Ad Rock, MCA, and me, Mike D
Been had a little horsey named Paul Revere
Just me and my horsey and a quart of beer
Riding across the land, kicking up sand
Sheriff's posse's on my tail 'cause I'm in demand

  •   joehilwashngton response of George III of #GreatBritain to the news of the #BattleofBunkerHill at the outset of the #AmericanRevolutionaryWar. Issued August 23, 1775, it declared elements of the American colonies in a state of "open and avowed rebellion." It ordered officials of the #BritishEmpire "to use their utmost endeavours to withstand and suppress such rebellion." The Proclamation also encouraged subjects throughout the Empire, including those in Great Britain, to report anyone carrying on "traitorous correspondence" with the rebels so that they could be punished. 3w
