#IchabodCrane #AmericanRevolutionaryWar #SleepyHollow #insorgi 3w

locust_furnace The "Boyd Parker Torture Tree"

During the American Revolutionary War. The Sullivan Expedition of 1779.
Hostile Indian attacks on American settlers force General Washington to send General Sullivans army of 5000 men to invade the Six Nations.
A scout group of the Sullivan Expedition was ambushed and captured by Loyalists and their Seneca Indian allies led by Little Beard.
12 known persons in the Boyd-Parker party were killed.

Little Beard and his men tortured and executed Boyd and Parker in anger over the presence of American troops in the area.
They were stripped, whipped, Had their ears, noses and tongues cut out. Their eyes were then gouged out. Their abdomens, cut wide open and their intestines nailed to the tree and forced to run around the tree until he fell dead. Their hearts were ripped out and their heads placed on a spear.
The bodies of Lieutenant Thomas Boyd and Sergeant Michael Parkers (who's head was never found) remains were left at the battlefield until removed in 1841.

Standing over 70 feet tall, 24 feet in circumference and estimated to be over 250 years old, substantiated by the International Society of Arboriculture and the National Arborist Association.

  •   locust_furnace @pabigtrees Burr oak. 2mon
  •   pabigtrees Nice, the ISA put one of those signs on an over cup oak here in Pa in 76, only problem is, over cup oak is not native to Pa. That Bur oak seems legit though. Thx for the info. 2mon
  •   locust_furnace @pabigtrees welcome! Did you ever hear of the "Fair play men" who allegedly signed their own Declartion of Independence on the same day as the Congress in Philly did, but they did it in Lycoming cty, PA. Under the Tiadaghton elm tree that was supposedly 500 years old at that time. The elm died off in the 70s. 2mon

  •   pabigtrees No, I never heard of the men, but I have heard of the tree. My ancestor was Col. Francis Wade. He was the deputy quartermaster general under Gen. Greene. He also served Washington as a captain during Valley Forge. Sure would like to find his grave. Any ideas? 2mon
  •   locust_furnace @pabigtrees thats awesome family history! Have you searched on "Find a grave .com" 2mon
  •   pabigtrees Not recently, found his obituary from 1801 in a newspaper. But that is the end of the trail. 2mon
