peakphreak I humbly accept defeat; for I am merely a man, and you, a great mountain.
Failed solo attempt on NW ridge of Grotto Mountain today. I initially chose this route thinking it was going to be a straight forward and simple plod to the summit, a harsh underestimation. Grotto is big, and very steep. The consolation of brief leveling of switchbacks was extremely evident this day, solace in its own regard.
After an exhausting reintroduction to my passion yesterday, I was fairly tired this morning and over slept my alarm. I didn't set out for Grottos approach until 10 am. Climbing via bankers hours doesn't work so well.
;) By 1:30 I was on the final stretch of Grottos MASSIVE ridge to the summit. The ridge was much longer and a little more technical then I had anticipated, and time was not on my side. I only had 2 and half hours of good light left and this last section of the ridge would have taken atleast another hour due to conditions. I didn't think it wise to continue.
A good call I would later find out on descent. As I neared closer to the treeline I had lost trail. The winds were ferocious and had covered all evidence of any human contact. I eventually found the trail again below tree line, only to lose it again an hour later. Sure glad I wasn't trying to navigate this in the dark.

I'm a bit dissapointed I had to turn back so close to the summit, but safety is always my main objective. All in all a great day, with exceptional views of #Canmore and the Bow Valley.
