cmusicaenovae Join us in saying Happy Birthday to Alice Adams! At 84 years old, Adams has had a long and fruitful career full of inspiring works that always pushed the boundaries of their mediums. Her featured work is "Scroll Circle" (2000). Read the following to learn more about her varied career. 2mon
  •   cmusicaenovae Alice Adams was born on November 16, 1930 in New York. After graduating from Columbia University in 1953, she moved to France to study tapestry weaving and design at L'Ecole Nationale d'Art Decoratif in Aubusson. She then moved back to New York, where she has lived since.

In the early period of her career, Adams focused on tapestries. It wasn't long until she began using found objects in her works, such as a dust mop, to create new textures in her works. Eventually, her tapestries came off the wall and entered a full three-dimensional space, with works created from found objects and materials bought in hardware stores. Soon, she moved past tapestries and began producing what she calls "Site Sculptures," because "it was uniquely built for its site, commented on its site, dramatized it and was often literally built into it." These works would evolve into her public projects. Free-standing walls, doors, arches and windows often made it seem like these works were part of some larger, unseen building, were designed to allow viewers to stand in and walk through them. It seems like a natural progression for her career that Adams would later collaborate with other artists on projects for train stations and transit systems in the United States and some in England. 2mon

icouldgoonsinging On this day in 1950: Judy appeared on the NBC radio show "The Theater Guild on the Air" broadcast out of Los Angeles. The program lasted 60 minutes, and this edition saw Judy playing the title role on Booth Tarkington's "Alice Adams" (played on screen in the 1930s by Katherine Hepburn).

Normal Celebrating Old Hollywood
historicalcinema #2 — Katharine Hepburn. What was my first Katharine Hepburn movie? The Philadelphia Story, I think. I used to not like her. I didn't like her voice. But then I watched more and more. Kate is simply marvelous. There's no one like Kate. I highly recommend her book, Me. It's delightful. Really, truly delightful. My favorite movies of hers are Adam's Rib, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Pat And Mike, Alice Adams, Woman Of The Year and many more. The list is almost never ending. What are your favorite KH movies?

Side note: These "rankings" of OH female stars are built on a combination of their beauty and my personal feelings for them and their movies. This is an extremely difficult task. And as always, with each new movie, they fluctuate. Please enjoy!!

pulitzerprize Awarded in 1922, "Alice Adams" by Booth Tarkington was the 4th Pulitzer Prize winner for a novel. Like the three preceding winners, this novel centers around the main character, Alice, trying to gain acceptance into high society. She's of a lower class, so it's an uphill battle. I never really realized these themes were so common of the early winners until I started this project. Apparently, early 20th Century Americans were obsessed with wealth, class, and high society. I guess not much has changed, unfortunately. This was Booth Tarkington's second win. He was one of 3 multiple winners in this category. Also interesting fact, Alice Adams is also the name of a famous and award-winning Canadian writer.

cinemaclassic Alice Adams is a 1935 romantic film made by RKO. It was directed by George Stevens and produced by Pandro S. Berman. The screenplay was by Dorothy Yost, Mortimer Offner, and Jane Murfin. The film was adapted from the novel Alice Adams, by Booth Tarkington. The music score was by Max Steiner and Roy Webb, and the cinematography by Robert De Grasse.

The film is about a young woman in a medium-sized town in the United States in the early 1900s, and her pretentious attempts to appear upper-class and wed a wealthy man while concealing her poverty. It stars Katharine Hepburn, Fred MacMurray, Fred Stone and Evelyn Venable. Hepburn's popularity had declined after her Oscar-winning performance in 1933's Morning Glory; her performance in Alice Adams made her a public favorite again. #aliceadams #georgestevens #katharinehepburn #classicmovie #cinemaclassic #oldhollywood #vintage #goldenyears #follow #followme
