sleepingsatyr Words can not describe how dope the "Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory" exhibit at the African Art Museum is. If you are in DC go see it ASAP.

When I saw this particular art piece I immediately fell in love with how eloquently the artist makes a point about traditional values, cultural  identity, and ancient spiritualism in modern society. To me this represents a clash of civilizations; old African traditions, religions, and culture against Western contemporary society. It is about regaining or retaining one's culture identity even after assimilation.

This collection is called "Tipo Passe" by Angolan artist Edson Chagas. Mr. Chagas takes the traditional African masks, these objects with immense ritual meanings, out of their usual context and invites the viewer to question the reality of what they are looking at. It makes us consider the role of traditional values in today's society as well as identity.
Pulled between the past, the present and the future, we wrap ourselves with forgotten heritage and dream of looking towards the future, but we are stuck looking into the past. For eternity we are toiling with rituals and ceremony, yet our past deeds are marked by unhealing wounds, the blood of false victory stitched by the threads of nostalgia. A story we each carry, of loss, of oppressors, of victims, of disconnection, of belonging, of longing to see paradise in the dark abyss of eternity.

  •   markopetric.ig Just wrote a paper on the political power of African women before, during, and after colonial rule where I analyzed how they went from being equals in decision-making (or at least being in charge of things in their "domain", depending of what specific group/region they were in) to being completely ignored by the colonial officials because their own women "belonged" in the household to being denied their inherent right in modern day Africa as a result of westerners imposing their idea of gender roles which became so deeply rooted in the culture. And I think the art behind you definitely relates to that too. Such a fascinating continent, yet so many people know so little about its culture(s) and history and think of it only in terms of hunger and disease and what not 2d
  •   sleepingsatyr @markopetric.ig well put, sir...i agree with everything you said! 2d

silvergreenmoments "Head"1912, Amadeo Modigliani. 'Only about 25 ( of A.M's distinctive sculptures) have survived. Modigliani was encouraged to sculpt by Brancusi. He made about thirty stone carvings before poverty and ill-health forced him to stop. These were mostly heads, of which this is one of the largest. Seven were shown as a ‘decorative ensemble’ in 1912, and Epstein later recalled that Modigliani would place candles on them, achieving the effect of ‘a primitive temple’. Modigliani eclectically borrowed from African masks, medieval carving and Khmer sculptures. These sources seem to have represented the spiritual expression that he sought to achieve' www.trindera.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk #modigliani #art #tewntiethcenturyart #modernart #tatemodern #victoriaandalbertmuseum #africanmasks #sculpture #art #artist 2d
