blackhairrocks Art : TRESSÉ AGOCHE

This an amazing design project founded  and directed by Joanne Petit-Frére. She uses braided hair to honor past, present & future spaces. "Joanne creates sculptural garments to explore ornamental value, cultural identity, displacement, existentialism & femininity"

zanzibartrading Baule ram mask from Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast, Africa). The Baule, an Akan speaking people, moved to the Ivory Coast about 200 years ago and adopted many masquerade and masking traditions from their new neighbors, the Guru people, who are much less plentiful but have a very rich tradition of using masks.
Contrary to what many westerners think, no African masks are used in a negative or dark way or for black magic. In fact, the opposite is true: all masks are protective: of the person wearing it, the family, village, crops or animals or secret society.
Many masks are used to fight dark magic. Today more masks are used for entertainment purposes, however many still have functions in initiation rites, planting, fertility and harvest festivals, in secret societies (think the Lions Club or Rotary Club as western equivalents). As westerners it is often hard to grasp the fact that these masks are but merely one part of an entire costume and ethereal event (involving music, drum beats, chants, a full costume, specific foot work as well as plants, flowers and other elements).
Imagine seeing a pair of ballet shoes hanging on the wall - while artistic, it in no wall can convey the beauty and power of say a presentation of Swan Lake.
When we see an African mask we see it as a piece of artwork. Yet most African cultures lack even the word for "art". All of these masks and figures have a purpose other than decorative! They are protective and contain the knowledge and experience of ancestors and or spirits.

Zanzibar carries literally one of the largest collections in North America of masks, figures, shields, weapons, baskets and pottery from Africa, SE Asia, Oceania (ie Papua New Guinea), Central and South America - most are shown by appointment.

If you have a price range ($10-50k), a country of origin, people (tribe) or type of mask or you've seen something in a book, magazine, online or in a museum - ask! We may have it and we are happy to make an appointment and show you pieces (serious inquiries only please). Zanzibar Fair Trade Gallery
