missmachiine Today we spent the day hiking, swimming and climbing through Actun Tunichil Muknal, a sacred Belizean cave which was historically used by the Mayans for ritual sacrifice. The cave still contains ceramics, pottery and human remains which are now almost completely calcified, and thus appear to almost glitter in the light. A tough but very rewarding day! #belize #sanignacio #centralamerica #ActunTunichilMuknal #trek #trekamerica #travel #travels #ruins #cave #sacred #mayan #mayanruins #mayancaves #hike #climb #climing #swimming 1mon

  •   cle2spr How is this possible if photography inside is not permitted? 2mon
  •   cayecaulkerplazahotel Seems it changes from month to month. However, this photo was taken back in 2009. I am pro- not having cameras in the cave after the accidental destruction of Maya artifacts and a skull. I just saw a couple photos in my feed from inside ATM so I believe they are allowing cameras inside at the moment. 2mon
  •   bobbytomncfc Yeah i was allowed to take pics inside @cayecaulkerplazahotel @cle2spr 2mon

Lo-fi farflungtravels
farflungtravels To see the amazing archaeological treasures of Actun Tunichil Muknal in Belize, you have to hike for an hour, swim into the entrance of the cave, spelunk one mile deep and climb a steep underground cliff. It’s so worth it to see the artifacts and the skeletal remains of sacrificial victims left behind by Mayans who worshipped the underworld gods here. It’s no wonder this site tops the @natgeo list of the best sacred caves. The cave opened for tours with a select number of outfitters in the late 90s, just before I took these photos in 1999. Cameras are now restricted in the cave after a tourist dropped one and shattered a human skull in 2012. 3mon

k.headers The dry chamber in #ActunTunichilMuknal has been preserved by archaeologists exactly as it was left by the Mayans over 1000 years ago. A stone altar set up for ceremonial use, ceramics used for making offerings to the gods, human skulls, monkey bones, a turtle shell, and the complete skeleton of a human sacrifice known as "the Crystal Maiden" because the calcified bones sparkle. Privileged to have visited such an amazing site! #historygeek #archaeology #instatravel 6mon

anitahsieh1 Guys, the #Mayans got me. Etched tribal markings on my forearm and now I'm next up to be sacrificed in hopes of rainfall. But in all seriousness, I wish I could have brought my camera with me to the caves. The limestone formations are all dusted with a light coating of sparkling calcium carbonate and impersonate ripples of upside down, solid waterfalls, riverbeds, and beads of water. The vastness really astonished every face in there, and while it was difficult to prioritize to either pay attention to your guide and group or gaze endlessly into the intricate bubbling waves that decorated the cave ceiling. The caves were not only of natural wonder, but also of religious and culture importance to the Mayan people, as it was viewed as a haunted and sacred place that can only be entered by holy people. Naturally it became a place of worship and realm of gods, where offerings escalated from kernels of corn and seeds to human sacrifices. Broken jars, storage pottery, blood letting plates, flint and obsedian tools, and human remains scattered deep in the cave and solidified to the surface. Of course, these view doesn't come easy, it was accompanied by a multi terrain trek: crossing rivers by foot, looking out for sudden wildlife pounces in the jungle, swims to the cave entrances, scaling and squeezing by these amazing cave formations, in near pitch darkness, to only be guided by our wavering headlights. Perhaps the most adventurous thing I've ever done and SO recommended for the thrill seeker and/or culture enthusiast. #atm #ActunTunichilMuknal #belize #sanignacio 6mon
