2manybeautifulbooks "Spring 1666: when the Great Plague reaches the quiet Derbyshire village of Eyam, the villagers make an extraordinary decision. They elect to isolate themselves in a fateful quarantine."
---------------------------------------
So begins the blurb on the back of this book and I loved the moody look on the cover and at 40p SOLD!
---------------------------------------
I am trying to spend less on books but the little book-buying-voice in my head says 'look for good condition preloved books!' Who could ignore that good advice? So the TBR keeps growing. Where do you buy your books - new in the bookshop or online, or second-hand?
---------------------------------------
A quick scan on goodreads gives mixed reviews of this one but I love fiction with an historical setting and I've been to the quaint town of Eyam with its little plague museum so I'm going to give it a go!

charissaweaks So, wow. I honestly didn't have great expectations for this book, simply because the outlook is kinda bleak. But man. The writing is seamless and simple yet amazingly crafted with detail. The author managed to make obscure 17th century life feel so natural and vibrantly played out. The pacing is perfect, and reminds me of the steady unfolding of The Girl With The Pearl Earring. I'm impressed and hooked. #yearofwonders #amreading #books #historicalfiction #17thcentury 2mon

mjediting My most recent purchases: 'Year of Wonders' by Geraldine Brooks & 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. I LOVED 'People of the Book' so when I saw 'Year of Wonders' on sale I snapped it up. And 'The Name of the Wind', well it's been on my to-read list for ages so it's about time #thenameofthewind #yearofwonders 2mon
  •   joekcowan Name of the wind renewed my hope in the genre. Patrick Rothfuss is a newfound favorite of mine 2mon
  •   mjediting @gaga_sue I will have to check that one out! 2mon
  •   mjediting @joekcowan yes I think we've chatted about it before! I can't wait to read it, although it might be a while before I get around to it. My to-read pile is huge 😬 2mon
  •   joekcowan Yeah my to-read pile is finally being eaten away lol and I just got my wife to read this book. Although I've never seen a version like yours! 2mon
  •   mjediting @joekcowan I'm afraid my to-read pile is never ending! I have a book buying problem haha. How did your wife enjoy it? This must be the Australian edition - I quite like the cover. 2mon
  •   joekcowan Ha ha I can relate. She just started yesterday but so far she enjoys it. 2mon

pagesandpaper | From the back of the book | When an infected bolt of cloth carries the plague from London to an isolated mountain village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges an unlikely heroine & healer. Through Anna's eyes we follow the story of the plague year, 1666, as her fellow villagers make an extraordinary choice......On a side note, artichokes pieces were worn in amulets made of black stone, thought to protect from the plague. I had no idea there was any correlation between the plague & artichokes when I picked them up at Kroger. Glad to see I'm keeping my family protected, since we ate these for dinner tonight ;) Good evening, bookworms ♡ 2mon
  •   larryrenner This image complete perfection ... Thinking I need to read this book because of your pic my friend ... 2mon
  •   pagesandpaper @brightonessa thanks Vanessa. I haven't either, thought this might be a good one to start with 2mon
  •   pagesandpaper @larryrenner thanks Larry. I've not read any of her's yet, but the subject matter sounds interesting 2mon
  •   2manybeautifulbooks I visited the cute little village of Eyam last year, it has a plague museum which was fascinating. This sounds like an interesting read will look it up and I love artichokes but I don't know how to cook them 2mon
  •   pagesandpaper @2manybeautifulbooks I bet that museum WAS fascinating! You can either steam (but it's takes an hour on the stove ) or microwave ( it's atrange, I find no difference in taste). I microwave. Chop the bottom stem off until it's mostly flush with the 'head' part. Then place in a glass bowl...or microwavable bowl with approx an inch or so of water. If it's a small one, try 7-8 min. It will be darker in color when you cook it. Take a fork, if it slides in easily where you chopped off the stem, it's done. If not, try a few more min. If you are cooking multiple artichokes, up the time as well. Then scoop some mayonnaise in to a small dish, maybe 2 tablespoons. Sprinkle whatever seasonings you like in to the mayo and stir. I use garlic powder. Pull a few of the outer leaves off and discard (they will probably be smaller leaves). After that, the leaves should come off easier and the 'meatier' part, softer. You scrape the leaves (after dipping in mayo) with your teeth, then discard leaf. You don't bite the leaf off completely, and obviously you are not scraping the end of the leaf with the pokey piece. As you get closer to the center the leaves will get smaller and thinner. When they become really small, just pull off, continue pulling till you reach the center, it will have a hairy like texture ( kind of strange looking). Pull all the hair off. What is left is the heart. It might not look like much, but it's the most tender part. Cut up in to small piece, dip in mayo, & enjoy ♡ 2mon
  •   2manybeautifulbooks Oh my goodness that was like having my own personal chef thank you so much for writing these lovely instructions I may give this a go sometime instead of just buying pre prepared ones 2mon
  •   pagesandpaper @2manybeautifulbooks haha...that's something I have never been called before. Yes...you must try since you like artichokes. You will see how simple that is. Let me know if you try it ♡ Now if only getting to Sicily were that simple! !! 2mon
  •   2manybeautifulbooks Wouldn't that be glorious I have been to Lake Como which is stunning and has amazing food but Sicily ..... One day I hope 2mon

gd_croix Rating: 4.5/5 stars ️. Most wonderful read after a long time. Set in a small and remote British village in 1666 decimated by #bubonicplague. It is also the haunting story of people's flaws and despairing human beings in the midst of catastrophe. . [BLURB] When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated mountain village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Through Anna's eyes we folow the story of the plague year in 1666, as her fellow villagers make an extraordinary choice: convinced by a young minister, they elect to quarantine themselves within the village boundaries to arrest the spread of disease. But as death reaches into every household, faith frays. When the villagers turn feom prayers to murderous witch-hunting, Anna must confront the deaths of family members and the disintegration of the community. . #GeraldineBrooks #YearOfWonders #historicalfiction #1666britain #plague #books #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #bookaddict #goodread #greatread #reading #favoritebooks #favoriteauthor #instaread #instabook #igbooks #follow4follow #igreads 3mon
