londonhistorian William Penn is not the only American link to Tower Hill's 'All Hallows by the Tower' church (see previous post). John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the United States was married there in 1797.

However, President Adams may have not been married there at all had the church not been saved by William Penn's father during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Admiral William Penn had his men from a nearby naval yard demolish the surrounding buildings to create firebreaks. Thus saving the church and allowing Samuel Pepys to climb the church's spire to watch the blaze he described as "the saddest sight of desolation".

londonhistorian On this day in 1682 real estate entrepreneur, philosopher, and early Quaker William Penn set sail to establish the Province of Pennsylvania.

A year earlier in 1681 King Charles II handed over a large piece of his American land holdings to William Penn to satisfy a debt the king owed to Penn's father.
William Penn was born on Tower Hill and baptised in All Hallows by the Tower, Byward Street, EC3.
