shield_maiden_of_rohan "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise."

movietrivia99 Royd Tolkien (J.R.R. Tolkien's great-grandson) potrays the Gondorian Ranger handing weapons to his fellow soldiers when the orcs are invading Osgiliath◆ Originally, Aragorn was to have fought the physical embodiment of Sauron during the climactic battle at the Black Gate, but the footage shot was not used in the final film. Peter Jackson super imposed an armored troll in place of Sauron because he wanted the main focus on Frodo & Sam◆ Having been officially introduced in the first Hobbit film in 2012- the last appearance of Bilbo and Frodo's sword (Sting) is when Frodo is stuck in Shelob's web. He escapes while (Sting) is still in the webs◆Ian McKellen's second day of shooting on the trilogy was Gandalf's final scene of the film, at the Gray Havens◆In the book, Eowyn rides into battle with the Rohirrim, taking Merry with her, but without revealing her identity to them or the audience. Instead, she is disguised as a character who calls himself (Dernhelm) and only reveals herself in the battle when she takes off her helmet to show the Witch-King that she is a woman. Peter Jackson changed it because he didn't want Merry to look like a complete idiot for not knowing, and a lot of the Rohirrim helmets didn't completely cover a soldier's entire face◆
The opening scene where Smeagol discovers the Ring was directed by Fran Walsh. Walsh (who is Peter Jackson's life partner & co-writer) prefers to remain more private for the good of their family). Her largely unaltered vocals were used as the screech of the Nazgûl in the trilogy.
The Smeagol scene she directed was suppose to appear in (The Two Towers) immediately after Frodo revealed Gollum's real name to him◆ Andy Serkis was not the film-makers' first choice to play the real Smeagol at the beginning of the film. Once they started considering other actors, they realized that Serkis was the natural choice◆

  •   movietrivia99 Peter Jackson is arachnophobic and based the (Shelob) design on the types of spiders he feared the most◆ Lawrence Makoare plays both the (Witch-King) and the pale orc (Gothmog). The Witch-King's voice was later performed by Andy Serkis.
Gothmog's voice was performed by (Craig Parker) who potrayed the elf (Haldir) in the the 2 previous films◆ John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) originally auditioned for the role of Denethor◆ Theoden touching the spears of his soldiers before they charge into battle was Bernard Hill's idea◆ The last words exchanged by Elrond and Aragorn are (I give hope to Men," "I keep none for myself) were the final words of Aragorn's mother (Gilraen) in the books◆ The end-credit portraits of each of the lead actors appearing alongside their name was the suggestion of Ian McKellen◆ In the extended cut of the film, the song during the (Houses of Healing) sequence is sung by Liv Tyler. This scene was David Wenham's (Faramir) first day of shooting◆ The film was the only time that a part 3 movie has won the Best Picture Oscar◆The scene of the Rohirrim charging the Pelennor Fields had to be filmed 52 times before the crew were satisfied with the take◆ During one of the shots filming the charge, a horse rider fell off the back of his horse. All the horses that came behind him miraculously managed to either miss or avoid him◆ Aragorn speaks to Eowyn before departing on the Paths of the Dead. In the book, this is actually the first time these two characters speaks to each other◆ A scene was cut from the finished film that showed Eowyn (Miranda Otto) stripping away her regular clothes and then dressing herself in the armor of a Rohan warrior◆ The confrontation between Saruman and Gandalf was filmed but was not included in the final cut for reasons of length and pacing. The scene is included on the extended DVD◆ 1mon
  •   movietrivia99 The scene where Aragorn's army assembles in front of the Black Gate of Mordor was shot in a desert that was still littered with land mines and bombs that hadn't gone off. The army had to sweep the field with metal detectors to make the danger for the actors and extras acceptable at least◆ When Frodo gets pierced by Shelob, Elijah Wood had 2 Alka Seltzers hidden under his tongue which he chewed up to create white foam which he then leaked out of the corner of his mouth. Some fans question why the stinger affected Frodo since he had his (Mithril) vest on. In (The Fellowship of the Ring) Frodo was stabbed by a Cave-troll with a spear and the Mithril completely protected him from any wounds◆Orlando Bloom's big heroic scene atop the Mûmak (elephant) was acutally Bloom on top of a pile of sandbags◆ The first shot of Sam's arm coming into frame holding Sting towards Shelob is actually Peter Jackson's arm◆The Battle of Pelennor Fields was filmed on a large field heavily populated with rabbits. The place had to be carefully inspected for rabbit holes, which were all filled in due to the danger they would pose if a horse were to step into one, which could cause a major pile-up, with injuries to both horses and riders◆Fans of the film often speculate why the characters didn't just fly on the giant eagles into Mordor and drop the ring into Mount Doom. This is not a plot hole. This was explained in the book. The eye of Sauron would have been a major obstacle but the film makers didn't think there would have been a need to because they felt it was obvious why they didn't do this◆ A normal major motion picture averages about 200 effects shots. This film had 1488◆Viggo Mortensen estimates that, during the course of filming the entire trilogy and including all takes, he "killed" every stuntman on the production at least fifty times.
The scene where Faramir is dragged back to Minas Tirith by his horse. The filmmakers made a release system to the saddle. Wenham held a handle in his right hand, and if the horse started to run, he could simply pull it and be released from the stirrup◆ 1mon
  •   movietrivia99 The (Minas Tirith) set was built on the same site as Helm's Deep◆ Composer Howard Shore can be seen over Legolas' shoulder during the drinking game in the Golden Hall-but only in the Extended Edition◆ The first Orc that Aragorn is seen killing on the Pelennor fields is played by Viggo Mortensen's son Henry Mortensen◆ The Oscar-winning end-title song (Into The West) while being directly about Frodo's departure, was inspired by Cameron Duncan's struggle with cancer. The first time the song was ever played publicly was at his funeral◆ When Frodo is writing the book, the top of the page notes that Sam was elected Mayor of Hobbiton, as told in the novel's appendices◆The moment where Eowyn comforts the dying king Theoden, Miranda Otto had to play most of the scene without her co-star. Bernard Hill had already completed filming all his scenes & had been given a farewell party◆ The film was originally going to end with a voice-over epilogue by Cate Blanchett's character, Galadriel, detailing the fate of the fellowship of the ring after the events of the movie. Scenes showing Gimli and Legolas for this purpose had been shot, but were not used in any version of the finished movie. Now that audiences have cinemactically seen the cursed (Mirkwood) in (The Desolation of Smaug) the unused film would have shown Legolas strolling through his restored homeland at the end of Return Of The King◆Frodo and Sam's climb up Mt. Doom was shot on a volcano called Ruapehu. The footing was so steep on the volcano that Elijah and Sean were hooked up to safety wires. If one of them lost their footing, the wires prevented them from sliding halfway down the volcano. The wires were painted out digitally◆ In the scene where Faramir is leaving Minas Tirith, he and his soldiers are riding their horses downhill. The horses were all re-shod with rubber horseshoes so they would not slip◆In the scene when Denethor attempts to burn Faramir on the pyre, the pyre could not truly be on fire because Gandalf's horse would not go near it. To solve this, the crew reflected a real fire onto a pane of glass in front of the camera so that it looks as though the pyre is burning◆ 1mon
  •   movietrivia99 Shelob's shriek is the combination of a plastic alien toy, steam hisses (inspired by an incident where an alligator hissed at Peter Jackson's daughter Katie Jackson), and the shriek of a Tasmanian Devil◆
Where Frodo is stabbed by Shelob's stinger, Elijah Wood was actually stabbed with a prop one. It had actually done damage to the point that Wood had to stay in the hospital for a couple of days◆ Peter Jackson told composer (Howard Shore) to pretend he was scoring a movie like (The Fly) for the Shelob scenes◆
To get enough extras for the Battle at the Black Gate, a few hundred members of the New Zealand army were brought in◆
100,000 people lined the streets of Wellington for the world premiere. That's roughly a quarter of the city's population◆ Denethor (John Noble) carried a sword strapped to his belt. Although he never draws it, the prop department made a full sword that could be drawn from its sheath, so that Noble would feel as important as the rest of the cast which used their swords◆Aragorn's speech at the black gate is a very close paraphrase to 45th stanza of the old Norse poem (Völuspa) The same poem is also the source of several of the names of the dwarves in the world of Tolkien◆
The deformed pale orc (Gothmog) was partly derived from the head of Joseph Merrick, also known as The Elephant Man and the alien leader from Jackson's 1987 film (Bad Taste)◆ Director of photography Andrew Lesnie caught most of his shots during the intense battle on the Pelennor Fields by putting on polo armor and wading into the thick of the action◆
The corruption of Smeagol scene had to be digitally touched-up in two ways. First, Thomas Robins(Deagol) accidentally blinked after being strangled. Weta Digital froze his eyes. Second, in the shot where Smeagol falls on the rocks (just before Gollum begins to narrate), Andy Serkis' legs were considered to be too muscular and athletic, and so they were digitally thinned-down◆ 1mon
  •   movietrivia99 The sounds of the Orcs were in part recordings of elephant seal pups at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA◆Billy Boyd's singing scene largely came about because Philippa Boyens went for a night out at a karaoke bar with the younger male cast members and she was very struck by the quality of his voice. Remembering that Denethor asks Pippin to sing him a song when Faramir heads off to war, she resurrected the lyrics from the novel and Boyd himself came up with the tune for it◆ The dead oliphaunt carcass used in this film is reportedly the largest prop ever built for a motion picture. According to members of the prop department, director Peter Jackson still thought it could have been bigger◆
Since John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) suffered constant rashes from wearing the Gimli make-up, the make-up department gave him the opportunity to throw his Gimli mask into the fire on his last day of pick-up photography. He didn't hesitate a moment to grab and burn it◆
The Lord of the Rings trilogy became the most nominated film series in Academy Award history with 30 nominations, surpassing both the Godfather trilogy and the Star Wars franchise◆ For the scene where Merry and Pippin are smoking their pipes at Isengard, Dominic Monaghan (Merry) had to drink a glass of milk beforehand to keep himself from throwing up while smoking the pipe◆ Elijah Wood is noted for his ability to stare fixedly in front of him for ages without blinking, which came in very useful for the scenes where the comatose Frodo was wrapped up in Shelob's web-like cocoon◆The final day of filming on the trilogy actually happened over a month after this movie was theatrically released, and three weeks after the 2004 Academy Awards. Peter Jackson arranged to film one final shot of skulls on the floor in the tunnel of the Paths of the Dead, which was included in the Extended Edition◆The last spoken line of the movie - (Well, I'm back) is also the last line of the book◆ 1mon
