jamieteller #MovieoftheDay: The Tree of Life (2011)

It's bad that I have to explain this. One of the greatest films by one of our greatest directors, and how many have seen it? And I myself nearly missed out on realizing its greatness by letting myself be let down the first time around. To be fair, the bookends with Sean Penn will always be a little too cryptic for my tastes, and one still wants to grab the characters and tell them to speak once in a while.

But put these gripes alongside the sheer beauty and vision on display, and it's hard to deny: this is a bona-fide masterpiece. Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography is among the greatest in all of cinema and should have won the Oscar by a mile, while the magnificent special effects (mostly practical, courtesy of the great Douglas Trumbull) do justice to Malick's ambitions, encompassing the creation of the universe and the mundane beauty of family life in 50s Texas in one epic film.

And the cast breathes life into the simply conceived characters; Brad Pitt has rarely been better than as the brutish, cynical father, Jessica Chastain became an instant star for her portrayal of the ethereal mother, and Hunter McCracken gives one of the great juvenile performances as young Jack, torn between nature and grace.

The soundtrack combines Alexandre Desplat's score with a perfect selection of classical pieces, heightening the intense beauty on display, making for a film that is, at its best, downright sublime. The Academy had the good taste to nominate it for Best Picture and Director and the foolishness to give it neither. But it won the Palme D'Or at Cannes (sadly at the expense of the even greater Melancholia, but what can you do), and awaits future generations of cinephiles to dazzle with its graceful brilliance.

For all its flaws, easily one of the greatest films of the new millennium. #TheTreeofLife #TerrenceMalick #BradPitt #JessicaChastain #HunterMcCracken #SeanPenn #EmmanuelLubezki

  •   cheese_please18 Fantastic film. 1d
  •   wisdomwanted Yes! I saw this at Glenwood. People were leaving by the rows. :( 23h
  •   jamieteller I saw it at the Tivoli. I was so excited and I left so disappointed (mostly because of the scenes at the end which just felt ridiculous at first). But it stuck with me, and I got the DVD and rewatched it, and realized how great it was. 18h
