  •   yelenabosh @thetruemrgrey I agree! Not necessarily teaching but maybe in a good publishing company or something like that?.. I am currently trying to figure it out. Haha no i get it, and thats true - your advice helps so much Yup, straight after undergrad so next year - fingers crossed!! Master here means i get a supervisor and for the entire year or 2 i write my own novel.. its definitely anything but easy so i have a lot to think about! Any novel ideas?! Haha 5mon
  •   thetruemrgrey I've worked in publishing - it's a great industry to get into! Are you in the US? Most of the big publishers are in NYC, of course, but there are so many independent publishers around. Lots of entry/level editorial assistant positions available, which is a great way to become a full-fledged editor. Anyway, lots to think about but it's very exciting! I wish I could say I had a novel idea... but if I did, I'd be writing it. 5mon

  •   yelenabosh @thetruemrgrey Awesome, im so glad i have someone to talk to who has worked there since it would be my dream job if I can work in that industry -- fingers crossed! Is Penguin or Random House a good place to start? Nope im in New Zealand - other side of the world haha Yes, that type of position would be perfect for the beginning and then hopefully i can move up Of course hahah I would do the same Are you planning on writing a novel? 5mon
  •   thetruemrgrey Oh, New Zealand, very cool! NZ is at the top of my Must Visit list. Penguin and Random House are two of the big ones for sure! Both based in NYC. I have a friend who's an editorial assistant at Random House right now. What's great about the big publishing houses is that they each have many different divisions, or "imprints" -- children's, academic, young adult, etc. -- each with their own team of employees, so it makes for more job options and the ability to work in specialized areas. That's not to say publishing isn't a competitive field, because it definitely is... but so is everything else these days! 5mon
  •   yelenabosh @thetruemrgrey Its a nice place to have a holiday but its definitely somewhat quieter than I can imagine NYC or US in general being :) Hope you make it one day though, there are amazing places to visit! Thats great and the exact reason why I cannot wait to at least get a job, no matter how small the role, in a good publishing company and then pick and choose once I have enough experience! What does your friend think of their job as an editorial assistant? Do they think its a good starting point for someone fresh out of undergrad? 5mon
  •   thetruemrgrey She really enjoys it! It involves A LOT of reading, so that's why it definitely matters which imprint you work for - because her only complaint about the job is that her particular imprint publishes some things that she really isn't interested in, like sports memoirs. As an editorial assistant she reads and comments on submissions, communicates with agents, and does a lot of administrative tasks. I think it's a good way to get your foot in the door, definitely. Or if you find work with a small independent publisher, like I did, you could have the chance to do a little bit of everything - I had a hand in all aspects from editing, design, bookstore sales, author relations, etc. It was a great learning experience! 5mon
