The universe contains more stars than there are grains of sand on Earth. Stars come in many different sizes, masses and colours. Some live longer than others, and some die in massive explosions while others simply expand and burn out. Every star in the universe, however, has one thing in common: each star was created from the same process. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and is the key ingredient for star formation. To build a star all you really need is hydrogen and gravity. Within stellar nurseries or nebulae, hydrogen clumps together. As this happens, the gravitational pull becomes stronger. Until eventually, the hydrogen begins to collapse, forming a protostar. As the hydrogen is compressed, its temperature begins to increase. Once it reaches about 10 million degrees (Kelvin scale) a process known as nuclear fusion takes place. The hydrogen is fused together to form helium. This process gives off huge amounts of energy which powers the star. The protostar now becomes a real star. How long the star will live and how it will die are determined by the stars mass. Smaller stars, which burn their nuclear fuel at a much slower rate, will live much longer than larger ones which burn their nuclear fuel at a much faster rate. Smaller stars will die a much more quiet death than larger ones. Larger stars will die in massive supernovae explosions, leaving behind a neutron star, pulsar, or a black hole. Smaller stars, however, don't explode when they die. They will simply expand and cool. Eventually their outer layers will blow off and form a planetary nebula. These stars will leave behind a white dwarf.
