ajohnsonjournalism Nashville non-profit promotes persuasion through simple images

Often, people think of persuasive message as something with words or motion, which could likely be a speaker or a commercial. However, persuasion can come in many forms including a simple image. Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization based out of Nashville, Tennessee. The charity’s goal is to raise money and collect shoes for people in need around the globe. The image above shows a small postcard the organization uses to promote both shoe and monetary donations. The advertisement is like many others Soles4Souls uses to promote their organization. I believe this method of persuasion is simple but effective. The ad makes an emotional connection with viewers. Individuals see a child in need and become moved to make a difference. Soles4Souls also show the conditions of those without shoes, which is another method of persuading their audience to donate. The target audience can include any individual from any demographic. Although children would not necessarily start a campaign alone, they certainly make a difference in encouraging donations. Monetary donations, however, would most likely come from individuals, either male or female, 18 and older.
One weakness of these types of ads is they have the potential of being unclear. There are many similar ads for other non-profits including charities that dig wells in developing countries. One potential solution for making a more impactful advertisement would be to add a short statistic about how many people are without shoes around the world or something of that nature. The statistic could help the image feel even more realistic to the audience.
