sports_wriiiter "Jameis Winston needs to be more mature like Peyton Manning was at his age". I don't excuse anything Winston has done up to this point but I wish people would stop piling on. Smelly Kiper Jr and the rest of the "experts" at ESPN said that he shouldn't be drafted at the top of the 1st round anymore... I'm willing to bet that he will still be a top 5 pick next year. #fsu #noles #winston #jameis #fhritp #NFL #nfldraft #peytonmanning 5h

redskinsanalyst Jackson, Reed did not practice Thursday

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson and tight end Jordan Reed were among a growing list of players on the Redskins’ injury report.

Jackson (sprained shoulder) and Reed (hamstring) did not practice for a second consecutive day. Defensive end Kedric Golston (groin), cornerback Tracy Porter (hamstring) and Akeem Jordan (knee) did not practice, either. “We just have to wait and see,” Gruden said, referring specifically to Jackson and Reed. “Injuries, I try not to get too excited or too down or anything. I just let the injuries play out, let the player honestly let me know how he’s doing and then the trainer and just go from there. [As] for predicting injuries, I try not to do that. So, we’ve just got wait and see. Tomorrow will be a better gauge of where they are.” Although Jackson did not participate in any team drills, he did take part in some individual work, including catching a few passes. “We’re going to challenge him, push him a little bit more on [Friday],” Gruden said. “And we’ll see where he’s at. But he’s still a little sore. I think he’s getting better and the range of motion is better. It's an injury where I think a couple of more days will do him a lot of good. …A lot of it is just pain tolerance.” There were two changes on the report: fullback Darrel Young (neck) was full participation after being limited on Wednesday and center Kory Lichtensteiger (groin) was limited after not appearing on the report the previous day.

Kicker Kai Forbath, meantime, was limited for a second straight day with a right groin muscle strain.

redskinsanalyst Haslett on Rambo: 'We gave him every opportunity'

The Jaguars’ touchdown in Sunday’s game proved to be the “dagger” that ended Bacarri Rambo’s two-year tenure in Washington, defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said Thursday. “It’s a shame because we gave him every opportunity,” Haslett said. “I feel bad because we drafted him.” Rambo was waived Tuesday and went unclaimed, making him a free agent. “We thought he'd pan into a good player, kind of like with Keenan and Perry and some of these guys we drafted here that turned into good football players,” Haslett said. “It didn’t work out." In the Redskins’ opener in Houston, Rambo, a sixth round draft pick in 2013, failed to tackle DeAndre Hopkins on a 76-yard touchdown reception. Against the Jaguars, Rambo took a poor angle on Marcedes Lewis’s 63-yard score. They are the only touchdowns the Redskins’ defense has surrendered. “I think the big play last week was the dagger,” Haslett said. “We tried as a coaching staff to give him every opportunity to be successful. Hopefully he’ll go somewhere else, calm down, relax. I think he was so nervous to make a play that he couldn’t make a play. Hopefully he’ll get another opportunity.” For more news follow me @redskinsanalyst

redskinsanalyst OPEN THREAD: Can the Redskins trust Brandon Meriweather?

Brandon Meriweather has undeniable talent. At times he can be a playmaking safety and a strong run supporter from the back of the Redskins defense. At other times, he is a liability on the field because he continues to lead tackles with the crown of his helmet, resulting in penalties, and more recently, suspensions. After his latest two-game suspension, Meriweather vows to change how he hits opponents. But at this point, can Jay Gruden, Jim Haslett and company trust Meriweather? "Ryan Clark has done a great job of holding the fort down. Now you throw another guy out there who knows the defense inside and out and can communicate with the linebackers and the defensive line and they really play well together. You can see that all through training camp," Gruden said of Meriweather coming back to join Ryan Clark in the Redskins secondary.
Clark and Meriweather lined up at the safety spots was the vision for this Redskins defense, before a big hit in the third preseason game got Meriweather suspended. Again. That marks his second suspension in as many years, and it's obvious to everyone that NFL refs are watching the former University of Miami safety every time he makes contact with a ball carrier.

At this point, can the Redskins trust Meriweather to not get another suspension? Can he really change the way he plays the game? He is a hard-hitting safety, which the 'Skins want, but those hits must get closer to the chest and body of ball carriers or Meriweather will continue to be a liability for Haslett and the Washington D.

It's simple: Can the 'Skins trust Meriweather? Let us know what you think in the comments.

redskinsanalyst Chip Kelly finally reveals why he cut DeSean Jackson

Eagles coach Chip Kelly shocked the NFL world when he decided to cut DeSean Jackson during the offseason. Kelly claimed that Jackson wasn't the right fit for his offense.
As the wide receiver prepares to meet his former team for the first time on Sunday, Philly Media asked Kelly how much he was concerned about Jackson's off the field demeanor.

Kelly responded, “Zero.” But Kelly did go into detail about why Jackson was cut. “Yeah, just trying to build the overall team in terms of what we're looking for offensively and how we wanted to get bigger at the wideout spot and that's what we did,” Kelly said.

In related news Jackson was the Eagles leading receiver last season with 82 catches, 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns. Not bad for a “small receiver.” To replace Jackson the Eagles made a trade for Darren Sproles, who happens to check in at 5'6” and 190 pounds. Last I checked Jackson stood at 5'10.” Things that make you go hmmm.
Though they play different positions (Sproles is technically a running back) the production is nearly the same. Sproles lit up the Colts on Monday night with 152 receiving yards and 203 all-purpose yards.
Following the Eagles come back win Kelly told ESPN, “First and foremost, Darren's a receiver. I've said that since Day 1, since we've had Darren. He's just a special player. How many ways can we find to get him the football? He is just a dynamic football player. He can run it, he can catch it. He's a complete running back.” So about Kelly preferring “bigger receivers”… We'll likely never get a straight answer on why Kelly cut Jackson but on Sunday Jackson will get a chance to make him regret that decision.

redskinsanalyst Gruden wants reinstated Meriweather to 'bring the funk'

Maybe they’re not Batman and Robin or any other dynamic duo you can think of. After all, Ryan Clark and Brandon Meriweather haven’t yet lined up on the field together for a regular season game. But now that Meriweather has served his two-game suspension for repeated violations of the NFL’s safety rules, Redskins coach Jay Gruden is excited to get both of his team’s starting safeties onto the field. “It’s another guy to communicate, another guy to help handle the defense,” said Gruden. “Ryan Clark has done a great job of holding the fort down. Now you throw another guy out there who knows the defense inside and out and can communicate with the linebackers and the defensive line and they really play well together. You can see that all through training camp.” And Gruden likes more than the communication aspect of the two safeties playing together. He likes the fact that the middle of the field might be a very inhospitable place for opposing receivers. “[Meriweather is] another physical presence to our defense,” said Gruden. “You throw Ryan Clark out there and Brandon Meriweather out there, two guys that’ll bring the funk so to speak, tackling-wise, it makes a big deal when receivers go across the middle.” If Clark and Meriweather do indeed “bring the funk” when they tackle the defense will have a dimension it hasn’t had in quite some time. As long as both safeties stay with the NFL’s safety rules it could be fun to watch.

redskinsanalyst Redskins' Gruden clarifies Griffin recovery timeline

We seem to have a firmer timetable for the recovery of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III from his ankle dislocation.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden was somewhat vague about how long Griffin’s rehab will take when he talked about it on Monday as the results of an MRI on the ankle were still being evaluated. He clarified things when he was asked about it on Wednesday. “He’s going to be in a cast for about 10 days, and then they’ll reevaluate after they take the cast off,” said Gruden. “Nothing new popped up as far as any new injury popped up. It’s what we thought it was. It’s just going to be 10 days in a cast and then we’ll look at it from there and it’ll be a rehab process – probably four to six weeks, somewhere in there.” Under the timetable stated by Gruden, the earliest that Griffin would be ready to play would be Washington’s Monday night game in Dallas on October 27. The latest would be on November 16 at FedEx Field against the Buccaneers, after their bye week.

There could be setbacks or Griffin’s rehab could run ahead of schedule so thos return dates are highly fluid.

redskinsanalyst DeSean Jackson wonders how he'll be welcomed in Philly

DeSean Jackson is confident he’ll be healthy enough to suit up Sunday.

What he doesn’t know is how he’ll be received by the fans in Philadelphia, the place he called home the past six seasons. It’s also the city where Santa Claus was once infamously booed. “That’s something I’m going to have to wait to see,” Jackson said Wednesday.

Despite posting career numbers last season, the Eagles released Jackson in late March amid allegations of gang ties and rumors of friction with head coach Chip Kelly. He signed in Washington a few days later. “I felt I put it [all] on the line for them when I played there and [they know] what I’ve done to help that organization win games,” Jackson said. “As far as if they congratulate me or boo me or whatever the case may be, I’m ready for whatever it is.”

redskinsanalyst Gruden feels 'pretty good' about Jackson's chances of playing vs. Eagles

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson and tight end Jordan Reed were among a handful of injured Redskins who did not participate in practice on Wednesday.

Coach Jay Gruden said he’s hopeful Jackson (shoulder) will be able to suit up Sunday in Philadelphia. Earlier in the day, Jackson all but said he intends to play against his former team. “I feel pretty good,” Gruden said of Jackson’s chances. “A lot of these injuries, I can be optimistic or not [but] it doesn’t really matter. It depends on how he feels, really, and whether or not he feels like he has full motion in the shoulder. We’re not going to put him out there in any circumstance where he’s going to be playing in pain because that will away from his style. He’s a reckless player, a fast player and if he’s not 100-percent, he’s not worth being out there.” Gruden added: “He’s a tough kid and I think he’ll get right.” Reed, meantime, has not practiced since suffering a hamstring strain in the first quarter of the opener. “It’s just a dang hamstring,” Gruden said. “It’s one of the most difficult injuries to guess upon, try to predict. Because you push him out there too quick he’ll reinjure it.” In addition to Jackson and Reed, linebacker Akeem Jordan (knee), cornerback Tracy Porter (hamstring) and defensive end Kedric Golston (groin muscle) also did not practice.

Limited in their participation were Darrel Younf (neck/back) and kicker Kai Forbath (groin muscle). Running back Roy Helu Jr. (knee/thigh) and left guard Shawn Lauvao (knee) practiced fully.

redskinsanalyst Redskins' Gruden: Eagles' release of Jackson a 'curious move'

Redskins coach Jay Gruden doesn’t know why the Eagles released receiver DeSean Jackson last April and he really isn’t all that concerned about it.

During a conference call with the Philadelphia media today, Gruden was asked if he found it strange that Chip Kelly decided to part ways with Jackson after he had led the team in receiving in 2013. “It was a curious move, yes. No question about it,” Gruden said via Philly Media. “When you have someone who has that kind of production on a football team, to just let him go seems a little odd. But people have their reasons. We have no idea why coach [Chip] Kelly and the Eagles organization did it.” Gruden, Bruce Allen, and the rest of the brass in the Redskins organization were happy to scoop up Jackson, signing him less than a week after his release. “We just have to move forward with our decision to go after him and target a guy with that kind of speed and production,” said Gruden. “Talking to him and talking and talking to his agent, we felt very comfortable about bringing him into our organization despite some of the reports that were out there.” Often on team’s trash is another team’s treasure. The Redskins hope that Jackson can be a jewel in their offense.

  •   b_boi_jettson Any word on signing another QB? 2d
  •   redskinsanalyst @b_boi_jettson The Redskins could decide to sign a third quarterback to the 53-man roster or add one to the practice squad. The pickings are rather slim in the veteran free agent market, which is populated by such names as Curtis Painter, Kevin Kolb, David Garrard and Trent Edwards. Among those who would be eligible for the practice squad are Greg McElroy, and Matt Scott. 2d
  •   b_boi_jettson Yeah that is some slim pickings. People hate me when I say this but Tebow is out there too. I think it could be a good move and Jays brother John is fond of his upgraded & revamped QB skill set... I'm just sayin 2d

redskinsanalyst Cousins: 'You’re going to have turnovers'

Kirk Cousins has appeared in nine regular seasons NFL games with four starts and five relief appearances of varying length. He has thrown at least one interception in all but three of his game appearances and four times he has thrown a pair of interceptions in a game.

It’s certainly fair to say that throwing interceptions is a weakness is Cousins’ game. Last year, NFL quarterbacks had 2.8 percent of their passes picked off. Cousins had an interception rate of 4.5 percent in 2013.

Cousins acknowledges that protecting the ball is important. “Protection of the football is one of those areas that is just critical to winning and successful to having a good team over the long run,” said Cousins, who is now the Redskins’ starter for at least as long Robert Griffin III is on the shelf rehabbing his dislocated ankle.

However, Cousins says that interceptions are part of the game. “You’re going to have turnovers,” he said. “The best quarterbacks in the league are going to average an interception a game. If the throw only 16 picks you’re probably going to lead the league in interceptions thrown. It’s part of the position; if you’re going to make some great throws and make some third down completions you’re going to have to, at the same time, throw some picks, too. So you take the good with the bad.” Actually, Cousins’ grasp of the numbers isn’t quite right. Nine quarterbacks who started all 16 of their teams’ games threw 12 or fewer interceptions. Still, interceptions happen.

But the Redskins aren’t good enough to make very many mistakes. In both of their games, the team that won the turnover battle won the game. That pattern is likely to continue for the rest of the season.

A pick here and there is understandable. But if Cousins throws one per game, the Redskins’ margin for error in their other aspects of the game will be very, very slim.

Passer rating offense: N/A
Opp passer rating: N/A
Yards/rush attempt: N/A
Opp. yards/rush attempt: N/A
DVOA (Football Outsiders): N/A

Year to day MVP’s:

Offensive: Alfred Morris followed up a good game in the opener with another solid effort against the Jaguars. He’s now third in the NFL 176 yards rushing and he will be a key to Sunday’s game against the Eagles. A good running back is an inexperienced QB’s best friend and he and Kirk Cousins, who will be making his fifth NFL start, should be good buddies on Sunday.

Defensive: Ryan Kerrigan led the Redskins record-setting sack brigade against the Jaguars with four sacks. He forced a fumble that kept the Redskins in the game against the Texans and has generally become the all-around defensive force the Redskins envisioned he would be when they took him in the first round in 2011.

redskinsanalyst OPEN THREAD: How many sacks for Skins vs Eagles?

In 13 regular season games in 2013, Eagles quarterback Nick Foles threw just two interceptions. Through two games in 2014, Foles has already thrown two interceptions. The dynamo the Eagles saw last year in Foles once Michael Vick went down has not been nearly as crisp in the early going this season. Couple that with the Redskins improved pass rush, and it's worth exploring the impact Jason Hatcher, Ryan Kerrigan, Brian Orakpo and Co. could have on Sunday's Redskins game against the Eagles. "When you get the push up the middle, it opens it up for everybody else and you saw Kerrigan get four and Orakpo had one and a half or two and it gets everybody involved," Gruden said Monday after the dominant 10 sack effort against Jacksonville. "The key is to obviously get teams in third down and long." The push up the middle comes from Hatcher, an impact free agent signing. In two games, Hatcher looks like one of the better free agent signings the Redskins have made in some time.
Playing against the Eagles will be tricky, however, due to their up-tempo style and focus on the run game. Philly coach Chip Kelly tries to avoid long third down situations where the Redskins have excelled.

What do you think? Will the 'Skins pass rush be able to get to Foles? What kind of impact will Jason Hatcher have? Let us know what you think in the comments.
