redskinsreporter News and Notes: 2015 Redskins training camp, Day 1

RICHMOND-- On Robert Griffin’s first pass he dropped back, hesitated a half beat, and threw sidearm and off target. There still is work to do.

We nearly had our first scuffle of camp. Jordan Reed didn’t like how DeAngelo Hall bumped into him after a reception. They exchanged words but teammates intervened before the altercation got physical.

Griffin did warm up as practice went on, firing some nice passes. He hit Jamison Crowder downfield with a bullet.

Jason Hatcher is trying to put 2014 behind him. “Last year we just didn’t have the right approach . . . I’m not going to go into detail about it but it’s all about the right approach to put together a good football team. This year, as of today, we have the right approach to a lot of stuff.” Rookie Kyshoen Jarrett, a former Virginia Tech Hokie, knows that if he is going to make the 53-man roster and be on the 46-man game day active list, special teams will be a big part of it. “I’m taking a full head of steam and I’m excited to do it and to be able to contribute to help this team win as much as possible . . . I think that’s one of the reasons why they picked me up, the foundation I came from out of Frank Beamer and how much he emphasized special teams as well.” DeAngelo Hall on the bright side of having to watch the defense struggle last year” “Those guys struggling got a chance to learn from that, got some experience. I think we got a chance to get another guy in here is Chris Culliver, who can make plays and dominate. It was obviously painful to watch but the end end result now having Culliver, myself, Breeland, Amerson . . . it’s one of the most talented secondaries I’ve been around.” Trent Williams wants to get an extension done with the Redskins but he does recognize that hitting the open market can be very attractive as well as lucrative. “For a player, it’s a tossup. Everybody wants to hit the open market, especially in their prime. But I just can’t see another team being a fit for me the way Washington is so, of course, I’d like to get a deal done.”

redskinsreporter Just like many others, Jay Gruden is very high on Trent Murphy

Second year linebacker Trent Murphy has seen his stock rise about as fast as any Redskins player this offseason.
The 24-year-old Stanford product truly impressed at OTAs, with eye witnesses describing him as faster, stronger, and just about every other -er in the book that relates to someone getting better. Those developments have led to many predicting that Murphy will be the main breakout player for the team in 2015.

When speaking about Murphy on Thursday, Jay Gruden said some things that will only add fuel to the hype behind #93's sophomore season. "Trent Murphy has done a really excellent job," Gruden said in his press conference before the first practice of training camp. "In OTAs, he probably had about 15 sacks, would've been sacks if we let the whistle blow. He's really put on some weight. He's stronger. He looks a little quicker. And he's got great knowledge of the system." Gruden is especially fond of Murphy's enthusiastic work ethic. "He's like a puppy -- he just gets in the weight room and he's just gonna get stronger and stronger and he's gonna become an angry dog here before too long," Gruden said.
The starting job opposite of Ryan Kerrigan is currently up for grabs, as Murphy and rookie Preston Smith will be competing for the right to play there Week 1. Gruden acknowledged that taking Murphy's name off the top of the depth chart may be difficult, though. "Trent's gonna be a tough guy to get out of that lineup. He plays hard, he's a physical guy, he's long, and he can move around quite a bit. Preston, we're excited about what he can do, and we got some young guys that played a lot last year that had to play when Orakpo got hurt and Trent got hurt, so those guys will also compete too." Competition is never a bad thing for a football team looking to get better across the board. And while it's obviously very early in the process, it sounds like Murphy has a leg up on everyone else for the other outside linebacker spot.

redskinsreporter Ryan Clark on Sean Taylor: 'He had all time great talent'

Ryan Clark may have spent the majority of his 13-year career with the Steelers, but he did play two years in Washington starting in 2004, and then wrapped up his time in the NFL in the Burgundy and Gold last season. That means the 35-year-old knows some things about football in the nation's capital.

Clark, who now works as an analyst for ESPN, was known for being a vocal leader on the field, and he has kept that reputation since retiring, too -- for NFL fans looking to hear opinions on all sorts of topics regarding the country's most popular sport, Clark's Twitter account is a must follow.

And on Thursday, in between tweets about DeflateGate, he gave his thoughts about some things related to the team he was a part of as recently as seven months ago.

Clark responded to a user who was wondering if former Redskins safety Sean Taylor could thrive in today's NFL, with the way the league has cracked down on player safety and illegal hits. Clark's opinion?

Ryan Clark @Realrclark25 (Twitter)
Sean could play in any league. He had all time great talent https://twitter.com/VDALE_44/status/626766149229809664

After that tweet, Clark provided another positive review of a Redskins defender -- whose wallet is feeling a little heavier after yesterday -- saying that the Kerrigan extension was a smart one for the 'Skins:

Ryan Clark @Realrclark25
Good move by the organization https://twitter.com/BarelyIn/status/626779640070193152

And finally, when asked about what third year corner David Amerson needs to do to bounce back after a major sophomore slump, Clark said something that'll only fuel the excitement behind a possible resurgence from #39:

Ryan Clark @Realrclark25
Had a tough year but he'll bounce back. He is really talented. Just needs to focus on technique https://twitter.com/BarelyIn/status/626795009006809089

Fans of the Redskins are already optimistic about 2015. But after seeing some of these answers, they may start feeling even more pumped.

redskinsreporter Redskins veteran DeAngelo Hall is confident he'll start in 2015

RICHMOND-- Hall, 31, said he’s confident that he’ll be able to regain the starting job that he lost after rupturing his Achilles in Week 3 last season. Bashaud Breeland stepped in at left cornerback after Hall went down. “To be able to go out after two surgeries and for the doctor to tell me how great I look and how amazing a recovery I’ve had so far, it’s a blessing,” Hall said after the morning walkthrough at the Bon Secours training facility.

Hall said that he’s been healthy for months, but that the team’s medical staff held him out during offseason workouts as a precaution. “Even in OTAs and minicamp, I felt really good,” Hall added. “I felt like I could have went out there and made some plays. So I’m excited to get out there. I’m kind of champing at the bit. It’s going to be a fight back there in the secondary. You know me, I’ve never shied away from a fight. I’m ready to bring it.” Asked if he expects to win back his starting job, Hall answered, “Yeah,” with a confident chuckle. “I just need to keep competing,” he continued, “Show that I can move, I can run, I can make every cut. The mental side of it is good to go. It’s just physically, being able to do it, I have to show these coaches that I can do it.” For more news follow me @redskinsreporter
