jazz_naila Tried this with a mute under my strings (a.k.a a piece of cloth I found lying around) sounds pretty cool though #bassist #bassline #basscover #cover #music #teenamarie #congosquare #youbaby #2009 #jazzbass #mute 9h
  •   berimbau7 ...had been doin' the same during the last days anything works, cloth, foam, even tissue or the like. And of course a set of biiiiiig flats-this works wonder.Got me some for my secondary bass this summer. And they do sound great. But suppose there's more variation to different brands than with rounds(mine are LaBellas). But you really have to struggle, much tension, very stiff feel, but otherwise fantastic! And that gets close to Headhunters 7h

  •   jazz_naila Are you talking about different wound strings? I have Bernie ball roundwounds. Does it make a difference on what ones you have as to how well the mute will work? Sorry I'm still new to this stuff do you have any pedals for your bass? @berimbau7 7h
  •   jazz_naila One of my favourites @jukkasammalvuo 7h
  •   berimbau7 No problem-it's just fun finding out things..was talking about flatwounds-and yeah, they are totally different from rounds.Very similar to doublebass strings. You know that zingy sound new strings have?Flats don't have that. You know the bass sound from the music you listen to-somewhat thumpy and deep?Flats have exactly this sound! They just were very common back then.Additionally those guys usually had string mutes on their instruments(ever wondered what's hidden under those big metal covers vintage basses used to have above their pickups and bridges?).So this is just a very typical combination for this kind of old school tone.Kind of perfect combination.Back then people tried to simulate doublebass sound by doing so(...and only later on players like Pastorius took this stuff away from their Fenders in order to open up sound). But flats are much harder to deal with.Usually bigger gauge and much more tension-probably better to try on a second bass(if you have one)..Flats vary a lot in brands-there are also some similar to normal strings (like Rotosound JazzBass77..).I got some LaBella DeepTalkinBass. Those are some of the more original ones.Pretty much standard during the 60ties.And heavy gauge-I think it's a0.50 g string(..to be followed in a minute) 6h
  •   berimbau7 Okay-pedals now😀...yep,got some, but they are not sooo important. But it's up to you-it's part of the game to find out, know what I mean?!?But honestly I think there's not too much need for pedals for a bass player.Although it's fancy, sometimes funny-yes,there are guys using them a lot...It's too easy loosing money on stuff you 'll find to be useless in a year...But there are some useful things:Compression is nice(and you don't even hear it..).A little chorus can be beautiful...But control and sound comes from your hands and the instrument-and it's good what ya do!I suppose Paul Jackson didn't have any pedals-punch and growl might come from much easier things like knowing your instrument, playing around with your eq,getting strong hands... 6h
  •   berimbau7 Enough for today😴.. 6h
  •   johnny_imperial You can always Palm mute, easier because you stop and go straight into any other type of fingering 4h
