dr.infection Antibiotic Sunday (I'm early): ceftriaxone (CTX) is a unique cephalosporin ! It is used for a variety of infections (both off & label); there's "tons" of data published on its use. In vitro, it has a spectrum of activity that I consider broad: MSSA (not MRSA), Streptococcus species (not Enterococcus), Neisseria species, Spirochetes, and many enterobacteriaceae (not ESBL producers, not Pseudomonas or generally other non-lactose fermenters). In some circumstances, resistance does occur; look at your antibiogram. CTX has a duel mechanism of clearance: unchanged in urine and in feces by biliary route --> dosed once daily (except CNS infections-->then BID). CTX and nafcillin (unlike other beta-lactams) do not require a dose adjustment with changes in GFR. This antibiotic (along with fluoroquinolones) has a higher association with C. difficile infection. What do I prescribe it for ? Sinopulmonary infections, CNS infections, complicated UTI's, endocarditis, soft tissue infections, prosthetic joint infections, gonorrhea, abdominal infections (with metronidazole). I prescribe it more in the outpatient arena, once daily dosing. Pearl: acalculous cholecystitis can be seen with CTX, usually with long term use. #md#do#medstudentslife #medschool#medstudent#nurse#rn#nursingschool#pharmacist#pharmacystudent#pharmacy#cdiff#internalmedicine#antibiotic#infection#gonorrhea#meningitis#pa#pastudent#pneumonia#medicalschool 30min

yogialplexus This is Day 24 of my #365handstands. Just finished my ear lecture. Had a bright idea. From now on, I'm going to incorporate anatomy/medicine facts that I learn in school to my posts. The facts will have to do with my pose or practice and should be able to help all of us in our daily practice. Just finished my ear lecture, so that's where we'll go today.
Your inner ear has fluid that moves as your head moves, sending signals to your brain as to which direction your going. The slower you move, the easier it is for your brain to adjust. That's why if you move your head around in handstand you want to fall down. Your brain gets too many signals and doesn't know how to adjust. Keeping your head still can help you transition from two hands to one, or help with moving leg variations. Easier said than done, though! Stay tuned for more! #yogamedlife
